So what's the word on the new Ultrasone HFI-780???? - Page 146

I have a pair on the way...my second pair of Ultrasones. I previously owned the ProLine 750. I'll post my impressions after I have a listen or two.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

I wonder if there is a much of a difference between the ALO and the Moragmi? I absolutely love these but I'm always looking to upgrade, don't want to get rid of them just yet! ~ Did you find they benefit from burn in? I bought my pair with the recable so I haven't heard stock and the preview owner didn't burn-in, claiming 100 hours of listening time.

It's just my opinion, but if you're already used to the sound of HFI 780 burn in won't do anything. I got my pair brand new and followed advice to start the 250hr burn in process, however after about 80hrs I started to feel stupid doing it and stopped. Durring "burn in" I'd put the phones on and noticed they sounded different at times but most times they didn't which I feel had more to do with my ears than the drivers.. furthermore, once I stopped burning them in and just listened to them a few hours per day (2-4hrs) I found the sound "settled down" rather quickly, like after 2 or 3 days which would be between 4 and 12hrs. From that time on they have sounded pretty much the same to my ears day in day out.. that's a bit short of the generally recommended burn in time of 250-400hrs in this thread.

That was just my experience. Anyway, I love these headphones, they suit my musical taste and needs perfectly. I don't see myself changing phones in a long time, but if I do I'll make sure to burn them in on my head

Thanks Headfi for helping me pick out the perfect phones.

Cheers!

I also got mine couple of days ago! I don't care about burn-in. All I know is they sound incredible! It's the first time I actually perceive soundstage.

I've got treble set to max. and I don't have any problems with highs at all.
The bass is a dream come true!

Im coming back to these.... Ive tried my fair share of other phones! But i honestly cant stop thinking about these and how good they are for the price. I went one step further and got me a good deal on some ALO 780's.

Yeah I saw that... interesting we were just discussing SA5000 vs HFI-780 for electronica, next thing I know you've sold your Sonys and your coming over to the Ultrasone side!

You'll have to share comparison between the two headphones, before I went 780 I was considering the SA5k.

That pretty much sums up my feelings about my purchase as well, I can't see doing any better for my needs. The challenge now will be to put together a speaker system that'll be as satisfying to listen to

I got some velour DT-250 pads for mine & now they're much more comfortable.

I hated the sound of them right out of the box. There was no bass & piercing highs. 500 hours of burn in greatly improved the sound. I had never really believed in burn in until I got these cans.

As for the highs, I recabled them myself and put felt under the ear pads which tamed the highs. Now they sound great.

Haha deleting your Head-Fi account, blasphemous! I suppose we should wait till you receive your 780s again but I'd like to hear your comparative views on them vs the SAs for electronica, I know theres quite a few people who like the Sony's for that genre that may have not ventured into Ultrasone territory. And remember theres always more Ultrasone models to try, Pro 900s, Edition 8s, 9s.

Thanks for the idea Canuck57- I just ordered a pair of those pads for my HFI-680.

I love my 680s and am perfectly satisfied with their performance. From what I could gather they're identical to the 780s but with a flatter response (i.e., no bass emphasis).

I was considering the 900's for my next buy but these ALO 780's pulled me in more The only other Ultrasone i am really interested in is the Ed.8 but being $2000AUD+ i think i will have to pass.

The HFI-780 is very lively, clear, and attention-grabbing. The "S-Logic" effect seems to work for me, too, resulting in some outstanding soundstaging. My only real complaint at this point is that the bass can get a bit thumpy sometimes, negatively affecting my enjoyment of certain tracks.

If someone out there is looking for a "fun" headphone to contrast with the HD650, I'd recommend looking at the HFI-780. Definitely better than the DT770 Pro 80 ohm (mine is in its box), IMO.

I disagree that the HFI-780 sounds bad at a higher volume (I'm pretty sure I've read this comment many times in this thread); I think it sounds great at a higher volume level. Really dynamic and "alive" when turned up a bit.
How about lower midrange (that was absent) after burn-in? My pair still sounds bodyless, hollow in mids and treble is still killing my ears.

Well I finally broke down and bought a new pair of cans after staying away from Head-Fi for a long while ... and I'm quite liking these indeed! Just need the headband to loosen up a bit more, as they are kind of tight for now.

- Seems as of late the SRH840's have been getting all the attention around here though.

The middle band has a piece of metal that can be loosened. Don't bend the other two sections though, they are hard plastic.
