So what's the word on the new Ultrasone HFI-780???? - Page 13

Okay, I hate you all!

I just sent my order into RMC. This will be my very first set of headphones - I've been using IEMs exclusively for years. My current IEMs are UE11s. I've had some off line correspondence with others saying they think the Ed 9 and UE11s are perfect compliments. Since I can't afford Ed 9s (and didn't want my very first cans to be that expensive, what if i didn't like them or they didn't work for me?) I've decided to take a leap of faith on the HFI 780s. Comments that liken the 780s to Ed 9s are what pushed me over the edge. Hope you all are right.

I'll eventually report back when they arrive, have been burned in and I've had a chance to really listen to them. I expect this will be several weeks...

^They will not match your UE11s. I hope you know that...but they will be good after a good burn-in.

I do know that but am hoping for something pretty good at this price point.

I spoke with the head of Ultrasone USA today. The HFI780's take what was learned from the Ed 9's, with a different placement of the driver, housing and tuning. It does use a different driver but other than that it is patterned very closely to the Ed 9 headphones, which is a good thing for those who want high quality sound at a medium or lower budget phone cost. I do wonder from having read accounts of the cable what a cable change would do.

I really should stop chiming in since I don't have direct experience with these specifically.
Hmm... So kinda in between the HD580 and the Grado sound sig?

Sounds good...

i personally think no IEM can match the sound of a good full-sized headphone. technically in sq yea but not in enjoyment of sound since fullsized cans give you a much larger speaker-like presentation that cannot be matched by tiny drivers placed so close to your eardrum.

i would never use an iem at home. and vastly prefer my full-sized cans over my earbuds/iems.

this kinda hard to explained, have you ever heard K81dj/K518dj before ? if you do then, add more soundstaging there, more forward mid, more impact/agressive (i dont know what you ppl call about this one) on every detailed from sound instruments, deep bass response (20hz, oh my...)...this bass very tight and well controlled not bloated or even muddy on the mid bass, great impact though... and that are from what i've heard comming out from my DJ1... very forgiving cans...

Custom IEMs can do things substantially better than regular IEMs, and the detail retrieval / instrument separation, allowing for a more life-like presentation of instruments in space is top-notch in customs - while most 'good' full-size cans can't really do it until you reach similar price range. So it is between impact and believability of space queues...

I agree, and the good qualities of full size headphones are many, as an bigger/hugger soundstage/headstage (some speaker-like), comfort, durability (well no in all... but beyers for example) and in some cases, better price to performance ratio.

Trivial to you perhaps, but not me. While I enjoyed several qualites of the Ultrasones, they just didn't sound quite right to me. This, in the end, was enough of a shortcoming to sell them. I am interested in the 780 which is why I'm posting in this thread.

I heard the same thing even though i only had mine for a couple minutes. I think itll be well into march by the time i get through this RMA process. At least i have other headphones to play with.

That S logic sound is unique to me and tolerable. I found these to be "Fun" rather than for reference. I didn't like them for gaming either. Of everything i own/tried, the 701 works best for the games i have.

The soundstage is wide, deep, accurate to the origin, and it's forward. It sounds artificial though like Environmental effects...but it works effectively.

These cans have a metallic tonality. I guess that's what is needed otherwise they would be way too dark.

If only the wiring/construction wasn't so cheap, these cans might actually be really good for the money. I'm not 100% sure what actually happened with mine, it either fried the wiring enroute to the right driver or fried the wire coil inside the driver. if i hit the right can or blew onto the driver, it would work again for a short period of time. if i was absolutely sure the driver was fine, i would recable these myself into split/balanced config.

Can you identify what did not sound right? Instead of pointing at S-Logic, particular sound qualities =] There was one thing wrong with all the Ultrasones I have tried, and it was not S-Logic.
