Yes, but I am not totally happy with Ultrasone. I like the 750's, as noted the 780's. . . well not very much. From all that I have read the Ed 9 have those who truly like them and those who do not. If ears can produce the Ed 9, which some like very much and the 750's, which I have and do like, there is no reason that much of their line can not be of high caliber. I find it a disservice to a customer's trust when a company can go so far off base, as with the 780's. This is my opinion. For those who enjoy the 780's I appreciate that you do and that is fine but I don't think gauze, paper towels, new cable and standing on your head should be a prerequisite to tolerable listening.

I let them run 24/7 hoping that they will change some. I still hope.

I tend to agree with you for the most part. Yes it is such a hassle to make the 780 acceptable in the long run. I do think the alo mod was worth it but the cost is more then the stock headphone and does take a leap of faith and still some find it bright. I enjoy my alo mod but the stock version is really a mess.

I did like the stock version but honestly it physically wore me out and I had to either get the mod or give up. I chose the mod and enjoy it still, but I realize many people will not want to hassle with it and perhaps some will. It does have the potential of sounding great. It's just up to each individual to hassle it out or not

The dang treble just kills my ears on the stock version regardless if I enjoy the sound or not...and I do enjoy the sound.

Are they brighter then Grado's?

Come on, jamato8, join the dark side and forsake these travesties of treble and shallowness.

I had SR60's and they gave me the same reaction. Though the SR225 did not, it's rather subtle difference but it did make a difference to me.

I don't have the SR60 now to compare but it was the same amount of fatigue. So same reaction but not sure if it's exactly the same tone. The Alo mod vampire cable I have is less sibilant and I seem ok with it but not my stock 780. I am talking fatigue not tone. Some say the alo mod is still bright but its ok by my ears now. Also even the alo mod takes at least 200 hours of burn in to calm them down.

hahaha I was one who agreed with you when you first said it was too bright. I then went for the alo mod but yes were correct at least for some ears, mine included....they were too bright.

Yeah, I have the Grado Sr-60s and sometimes I find them too bright and the sound quality isn't very airy or roomy just detailed. Also looking for clearer and better drum impact. Does the S-technology or whatever present a good sense of soundstage? I also find the Sr-60s sound too thin or not full enough. What headphone do you think I should go for, I was thinking maybe Denons, Ultrasones, Beyers or HD 650s, with music tastes mostly in Rock.

I like how they sound, and I don't let them "burn in", I just listen to them. They're fun phones.

I like how they sound also.

I didn't say I don't like the sound. I do like the sound but was physically fatigued by the stock version. I know it sounds weird but that's my experience.

goober-George the 780's really do rock hard and are great. I stubbornly held on and my Alo Modded version is really great. Reading through this thread you should see it's possible to tame the highs and make these work and also all ears are not equal. Some have no problems with the treble, I just happened to be more sensitive then I wish I was hehehe

I would say Denon 2000 (which is what I have) is your next best bet, it's way smooth for me. But I do love the slamming bass of the hfi 780

But the Denon's are also way cool and a close second for me. I own them and listened to them when my ears got fatigued by my stock 780's...I have both stock and alo mod of the 780's btw .

You will like the Edition 9 better - they never had any of the faults of the HFI-780. I have the first set of ALO modded re-cabled HFI-780, and while they are worlds ahead of the stock 780, they still don't quite measure up to the Edition 9. The Edition 9 soundstage is not as in your face, and is as expansive as my PL2500, without the recessed mids. A neat trick if you ask me, enough that I am listening to my second pair of Edition 9 right now, but I love my ALO 780 and wont part with them either. Right now the ALO 780 sound like a closed version of my APS re-cabled RS-1, but with better bass.

Question about the dampening materials: is a potential problem that the cotton could get stuck in the drivers?
I also have the same impression of my ALO-780s, they sound a lot like the RS-1 but with better bass. They are without a doubt the best closed and open headphones that I have heard for rock.

Not bad

Question: Does the S2 cable mod reduce most of the sibilance and harsh trebles?

Are you still gonna get the Jenna cable as well? I want to hear your impressions if you do in comparing the Vampire to the Jenna.

I really am digging my Vampire cabled 780's more and more as they are pretty much burned in now
