The 250 ohm versions are a little bright in the treble, and their midrange is recessed compared to the 780's

See my post above Overall, I find my 600 ohm DT990's to be a much more refined headphone than the HFI780.

Also, FWIW, the older "Pro" version of the DT990's have a much more recessed midrange and much more aggressive treble than the 2005 versions. I owned both at the same time for a while and was able to compare them directly. Not the same animal.
I been wondering if recable would make my dt990 smoother or maybe just hunt for a 600 ohm version. I always liked the DT990's but that treble spike made some music hard to bear with but a lot of well made music was fine on them.

Those 600 ohm versions seem hard to find.

I had the 32 ohm version of the 990 05 by the way. Wonder if those were even worse than the 250
post #1414 of 2328
I would venture a guess they would not be worse.
From memory reading peoples comments I don't remember anyone saying they were worse...

Just a guess! hehehe

Sadly, yes, the 600 ohm versions are basically available only via the "Manufacture" site from Beyer.

I am sure a recable would help, though.

Not sure, never heard them, but I can't see any reason to assume they would be BETTER than the 250 ohm versions, which do have a bit too much treble. I was very relieved to read that the 600 ohm versions eliminated this, and when I got them, I definitely found this to be true.

Greetings Head-Fiers

Long time lurker here, first post. I've now had my HFI-780s for about 3 weeks--my first serious headphone purchase. I wanted a decent set of closed cans and these seemed like they would be worth checking out.

I've been burning them in with pink noise at night and listening at work. Only about 80 hours so far, realizing by all accounts, that they'll need much more time to settle down. At this point, I'd say I almost really like them. I like the mids and highs. I love the detail. And I must say that the low frequency extension is remarkable; I'm hearing a bottom octave that I've never heard before in some of my music collection.

The only thing that really bothers me is the low-mid-bass hump that Skylab mentions. I really notice it in the neighborhood of 80Hz. It depends on the recording, but sometimes it can be pretty annoying. Check out Radio Head's A Punch Up At A Wedding on Hail To The Thief. The lower E in the bass riff just booms.

Right now I'm either listening directly out of my 5G ipod or through my DIY cmoy amp (the cmoy's bassy coloration definately doesn't help here).

My questions for you guys:

Will more burn-in help? (There have been subtle changes in the sound during burn-in, but this specific issue has been pretty constant for me and I suspect it isn't just going to go away.)

Will better amplification help? (I've ordered parts to build a Mini^3.)

Are there any modifications that might tame this peak? (I think I've read about other Head-Fiers opening the cups and installing dampening material, but I'd like to gather more information before attempting anything like this.)

Thanks!

Yeah, but some people don't understand that, that THIS (2005 ED) version is superior to the old pro, and besides of that, generalize as if it was the same animal as the 2005 ED (specially in the recession of the midrange (that is more severe) and the same as the treble...). The 2005 Ed is the evolutionated/evolved animal....
And In almost all the aspects...
Was for all that that i bought the 2005 Ed instead of the "PRO" version (it last was cheaper (and it seem a little too cheap (i don't refer to the construction but to the appearance)) but ugly).
In other hand i want to hear more about the mogami with the HFI-780, i can't wait until i have the money......

Well I've been away for a few days and left these to burn in more while I was gone ... After 3+ weeks I now accept they aren't for me.

I agree with every negative that's been said previously, it confirms my earlier posts. I absolutely loathe the treble and the many details that it probably helps to obfuscate if they are presented at all in these headphones.

Well, my S2 Audio recabled 780's are on their way back to me today! Maybe with luck they will come Saturday.

Here is what they look like, they came out great!

Rob - that looks awesome.
Wow, whats the cost to have them recabled?
Yes, beautiful; and one more time, the cable seems durable and nice, and is cheaper (as it should be...).

You can also make proper selections of opamps, tubes and interconnects to tame the bass (or treble), or EQ. The dampning material makes a lot of sense - my ALO modded 780 have dampning cable and removal of the diode board, with great improvements.

I will let Scott from S2 Audio answer that.

Wow... that looks amazing... S2 takes great pictures Fast turnover time too...

I might get them recabled if I don't like the treble.
