The Avett Brothers: Emotionalism

One thing I love about eMusic is how easy it is for me to stumble upon really great stuff. My latest great find: The Avett Brothers, a North Carolina-based "non-traditional bluegrass" band. The sound is very alt country, but the lyrics are so much deeper and the singing so much more emotional than anything in this genre that I've come across before.

I downloaded the 2007 album, appropriately titled Emotionalism. The songs are powerful and the sonics are very good. This songs on this album sound much more like indie rock than bluegrass, but the roots are always very visible in the harmonies and range of instruments. I became so hooked that I did some searching and got another album, Four Thieves Down, from Amazon.com downloads. This album is decidedly more traditional and I don't like it quite as much as Emotionalism, but it is still highly enjoyable.

Great stuff, well worth checking out if you like bluegrass/folk/alternative country/rock!

I have only heard 2 cuts but...

my favorite (Internet) radio station, WNCW, polls its listeners each year for their 10 choices for album of the year. Emotionalism topped the 2007 poll.

I like the Avett Brothers too.  If you like them, you would probably love the album I See A Darkness by Bonnie "Prince" Billy.

I saw these guys live last year in Columbus.  Very fun show, they have a small yet dedicated fan base who knew every single word of every song :)
