iPod nano sound quality: 1st gen vs. 2nd gen

How does the sound quality (headphone out as well as line out) of the 2nd gen iPod nano compare to the 1st gen nano?

pretty much identical in tests. The 1G scored a TINY bit better.. i mean really like 0.01 less db bass rolloff.

1G can take rockbox which is the biggest advantage it has.
2G has search functionality in apples firmware.

IMO 1g > 2g just because of rockbox, I absolutely hate Apple firmware.

both probably sound identical to human ears... i have the 1G and i tested out the 2G for a bit... too close to say much for the headphone out...

i hear the 1G has a "better" DAC... maybe ask someone who uses an amp for both?

I'd say 1G because of Rockbox and the DIYmod

how does the nano 3rd gen and iphone compare to these? is there a link to any tests? (sigsegv0x0B mentioned one scored higher than the other?)

ive not heard the 2nd, but i have the 3rd gen and the 1st and personally, i prefer the 3rd for the express reason: it does not hiss much at all - and the other nano did not hiss much, so this is amazing. i use it with some eq as the bass is not as deep as the touch for instance. cheers

shigzeo - can you clarify what you mean regarding hissing? It seems you are saying both the 1G and 3G nano's dont hiss much?

Is this hiss apparent via an LOD?

The touch has more bass than the 1G and 3G nanos?

Just got a mint 1G 2GB Nano and installed Rockbox after hearing about it... and I'm loving it.
