Here's what I did, start Automator, a start up window will appear, click on custom, now in the far left column click files and folders, and then in the right column click and drag rename finder items into the main workflow area. A text box will appear asking if you want finder to create copies of items when the workflow runs (to preserve the original), make a choice. Now you have several options, I used the pull down menu and set make sequential, and added a new name for the files. You can add multiple things into the workflow, for example, if you wanted to batch rename a group of files with sequential numbering and todays date you would just set the first workflow to add the date, then drag another instance of rename finder items into the workflow pane and set it to sequential rename.
Once I had the workflow set how I wanted it I clicked file, save as plugin, named it Image Batch Rename, and made sure it was set to plugin for finder, and clicked save. Now when I highlight a group of images I can control click, scroll down to more, then Automator and pick Image Batch Rename.
Sounds complicated, but it's really not, give it a try!
