Advice please: home theater or computer speakers? - Page 2

i have the pre-cursor to the z5500...the z680, and imo the single drivers are not bad at all.
the "crappiest bookshelf speakers" will be just that: crap.
the weak link with the logitechs is the speaker wire. substitute some decent copper 14 or 16 guage wire, and as mentioned, the price to performance ratio is quite good.

Change!

Well I just received my MacPro after a massive wait. I am now getting a Wharfedale setup for the speakers. They are the wharfedale opus range, 2 rears, 2 centers, 2 tri-surrounds and a sub. Together with the Pioneer VSX917 receiver. Total costs is only $1000 after my discounts.

You can see speakers here Wharfedale .

What do you guys think.

I also have a question. I am connecting the computer to the receiver via the optical cable. Will the be 5.1 sound or do I need a separate DAC?

Thanks heaps.

TBO, every time I hear "surround system" i imagine one of those all-in-one packages which are musical junk. If you're going to set up a surround system, go to a proper hi-fi retailer, one that doesn't sell Bose and other rubbish.

Thanks for that. Ordinarily I would. I know Wharfedale are not the best. But I bought the computer, receiver and speakers as a package and got a massive discount from this big department store. The only other stuff they sell is Bose, pioneer, sony and LG and other crap brands. These are the best they stock. Plus, $1000 for the receiver and speakers is a bargain. The receiver itself is quoted as over 900 in Aus.

Will I have a problem with the optical connection and 5.1?

I dont know the receiver you are using, but those Wharfedale speakers should make you very happy. I have a pair of Diamond 9.1s and they are an incredible bargain at their price (even stereophile magazine thought so), the Opus range is higher up in their offerings, so they should sound very well if the amp matches them.

I personally think I could get more out of my wharfedales, but I would much rather get new speakers than a new amp, as I am incredibly happy about the bargain I got with the my NAD c740, which doesnt fit perfectly with the Wharfies but is very nice and managed to get for a steal on eBay. The setup does well for now, until I get a larger flat.

Enjoy your new system (Im sure you will), it should keep you happy for a long while.

Thanks for that mate. Amp is quite good, not great but it will suffice for the price. I am not going to spend over $2000 for this setup. It was not my primary concern just wanted to get something better than those logitech speakers.

Do you know if I will have a problem connecting it to the computer via optical cable and getting 5.1 sound?

This setup will be many times better than computer speakers.

I dont think you should have any trouble getting 5.1 sound out of your computer to your receiver. I there is such a setting in your computer drivers (I dont know mac) you should set the digital out to RAW rather than PCM out, so that your receiver then decodes the signal to its 5.1 AC3 or whatever. PCM will shoot out a standard downmixed signal like that of a CD player and you will only get stereo. Same thing goes if you also hook up a DVD player to your receiver.

Let us know your impressions when you get the system running.

Let me say I envy you for your opus speakers I think you got a very good deal for $1000

Was it a mis-type or did you say you got 2 center speakers?

Great. Thanks for the advise. No that was not a mistype. For some reason the package came with 2 centers. Not sure why but they sounded great in the shop.
