Official ATH-ES7 Thread - Page 35

@dosley101 Hi - just received my ES7's and was just looking at various options and came across the thread. Does ATH sell the ESW9 pads as replacement? If so, how much? How do they sound with the replacement pads you received on?

Also - I came across this on ebay and was considering getting them. Any thoughts?

Just got the headphones yesterday so still forming my sound impressions. So far it matches what a lot of people say. Great bass. Great for things that are non-acoustic or vocals oriented (rock, hip-hop) but not quite "amazing" when it comes to female vocals (Adele, Norah Jones, etc.). Still, they are amazing LOOKING, haha.

Thanks in advance for any input anyone might have.

Not sure how much the ESW9 pads are, but email Dave and I'm sure he can tell you.  As far as the ES7 replacement pads, I would say they sound the same, but just don't have quite the same fit and finish.  Those velour pads look comfy but you would probably give up some bass and isolation.

Here is my solution for female vocals:

Some open cell foam in the ear cups, it mellows out the mids and tames down the treble and if you cut it big enough it pushes out the pads to give a little more bass and warmth.

I would call this my ESW9 mod as it really makes the ES7 sound much closer to the ESW9.  I'm hoping to do more of a comparison but just got my ESW9 yesterday.

Gotcha. I emailed Dave to see what they have.

Interesting mod. Will definitely try that down the line!

Based on the comment about isolation, might hold off on the velour as this is the first time I've found "isolation" to be a bit problematic. I generally didn't care - even when I was listening to open headphones on the street - but these seem to let so much noise in that I do have to turn the volume up in order to get the quality I want.

I just wanted to comment on how fun these headphones are,  I had planned on selling them after I bought my ESW9 but, I think I will keep these for Rock/Pop/Rap/Electronic.

The first track on the Dead Weather - Horehound - 60 Feet Tall, just is boring and too tame on the ESW9.  With the ES7, the kick drum is felt and the cymbals have just the right amount of zing and are much more forward.

I've found this to be true with IEMS also, there are just some suited for TDW, I think my favorite for this CD were the MTPC.

Ironically, Jack White's new single - Love Interruption, sounds much better on the ESW9.  Either way, I really am enjoying my little AT family.

So far bass isn't much of an issue for me but what about the high trebles? I'm listening to Celine Dion's "My Heart will go on" and there are all sorts of high triangle "tinkle" noises that the headphones do not output at all. Is this something that changes with more burn-in?

Curious what others have experienced.

I have been using my ES7s with foam inside the pads. I used the extra foam layers from my HD 25s.

I also made some changes to the looks of my cans. I got the brushed metal look to cover up scratches.

Comparison between the original finish and the outcome of my experiment (left can) -

I think they look nice with the brushed metal finish.

Wow, those look great!  Nice Job!

Wow - the brushed metal look is great! How did you do that?

Quite easy actually. Used a scotch brite pad.

I took a damp one and gently ran it over the cans in one direction. The most important thing is to do the polishing in only one direction for a uniform finish.

@ObeyurMaster

How did you avoid rubbing out the "Audio Technica" print on the cups?

It looks pretty cool and very much like the brushed finishing on the ES10. I've got both the ES7 and ES10. The ES10 is technically a better headphone, but the ES7 works much better with some music. I get much more detail with the ES10, but the ES7 works so well with guitar driven music.

I have cut an iPad screen protector into two circle shaped earcup protectors and I use them with my ES7. There are some small air bubbles, but I'd rather have that than scratches. The ES10 cups are slightly more rounded, so I cannot apply the screen protector on them.

I think the print was kinda embedded deeper into the metal, cause I just polished right over it.  It just worked out...

Tip: you can get protective skins made specifically for the ES7 from Bestskinsever.com . Look in the 'Other -> Heaphones' menu. Cost about 6$.

Just wanna say...

ES7 >>>>>>>> ESW9

I absolutely hated the ESW9 with every fiber of my being, and loved the aggressive sound on the ES7.

I kinda want them again, but that ear discomfort... frown.gif

Wondering if anyone has bought these for theirs... The discomfort I get is from the pleather mostly. God, I hate pleather/leather.

If you don't like the supra-aural clamping force on the ears, you can make cup rotation adjustment so that the clamping force is in front of the ears, on the cheek bones instead.
