iBasso D1 + K701 + Flac = $500 = Aural Ecstasy

How is it done? I know it's not the best

... BUT...

I have $10,000 ESL's. I've got the equipment. I have a custom engineered, dedicated 24x28 sound room to house them (a $50k upgrade on our custom home). On top of that, I'm not easily impressed but I have to tell you for $500 I am blown away with the quality of what I am hearing.

I am listening to the new Eagles album (Long Road Out Of Eden) and the textures, the layers, and the inner details is beyond my wildest expectations. For a fraction of the cost I have sound quality that is rivaling my mega investment.

And I get to take it with me! How great is this?

You can do some work on the capacitors. On page one of the D1 thread it shows where some Black Gates have replaced the existing caps. I would assume the opamps they ship with the D1 are better than with the first D1's after all of the feedback from here and especially from Hiflight.

Yeah, I have a friend who doesn't really care either but most of what he gets is grown right here in San Fran.

I really want to get that album but no Walmart around here. With the quality that the portable systems are getting to be, I agree that being able to take it with you is exciting. It's like have a truly portable reference, which is a far cry from just a few years ago when you could only get that at home, if there.

So true. I just wish there was more choices for non-lousy DAP's with SPDIF out's.

Well you could use one of the mini computers as a drive with the USB out or use a portable CD player, which is what I did for a long time with my Monica II dac. I think the sound out of the iRiver H120 is pretty good and changing the hard drive to a 30 or 40gb (hard to get) or the H140 to an 80gb gives a lot of good music.

Yeah, that's the thing... since the D1 has already impressed so many people, how much better is the D2 going to be?

I love the versatility of the D1. I am not sure if another one of this type will come along as everyone seems to be gravitating towards the USB only option as it is more lucrative and available. I would also like to get another D1 just to have it on hand because with opamp changes it really does shine. I also in some applications like the larger size because it doesn't move all over the table when tugged on a little. It also has the big amp sound to me.

I have a Headroom Micro Dac & Micro Amp. I setup two computers referencing the same library of FLAC files. I ran Foobar -> Asio -> USB and one computer hooked up to the D1 another up to the HR MS. I ran pink noise and set the overall output to within 1db. I was able to cue up the same song(s) and just switch headphone jacks. The only difference I could notice was more low end power on the MS. It was VERY, VERY small and on most songs I could not tell any difference at all. If I had to say which was better or which one was more accurate? I couldn't because it was so slight and how do say which was more accurate unless you are referencing live music (non miked) against the recording. One set cost $600 the $250. Bottom line, I think my micro stack is going up for sale. The power bricks are monstrous and weigh a couple of lbs each and the stack is much heavier. The D1 definitely has it on the cuteness factor.

I am going to be publishing a more detailed review after I spend a little time with them.

SO I guess this means you don't want to get rid of the 701s huh?
