I'll take the criticism if I deserve it!!!

Thread Starter
I've been accused by several Head-Fi members of having illegal mp3's. Here is the situation. 4 years ago I sold my 300 cd collection on ebay. Before I sold them, I copied some tracks of each cd to my hard drive. I've been told through these forums that I now have illegal music by doing this. My take on the situation is that I did indeed pay for this music in the huge monetary loss that I took when I sold the cd's.......Everyone weigh in with your opinion or the legal ruling on this situation please. Thank you for reading this and even if you disagree with my opinion, that's ok....Rick

Four years ago?

No offense, but how does this matter now?

Lol I have lots of downloaded music on my laptop. But then again, I live in the Netherlands, aka legal-to-download-music-land.

real musicians do it for the love of music anyway...

My take is that if you bought the CD you have every right to rip it. Selling them later at a loss doesn't change that.

Why make an issue of it?

Please.. stop these pointless threads...

Just edit your post, put your tail between your legs, and move on... simple, huh?

Well, such a thing would be perfectly legal in Canada thanks to our recording levy. I don't think the situation is the same in the US, however.

So basically one person can buy a CD, rip it, then sell it cheap to the next person. The next person rips it and and sells it to another person who rips it and sells it to another person and so on and so on....

Next thing you know 1 million people have a copy of the CD, yet only one person actually paid the artist for it.

No problem

I don't have an opinion either way about your situation. Personally, I would feel a bit dishonest if I were to copy a CD and then sell it, but that's just me. A good rule of thumb that I like to follow is if you have to question whether something is ethical, it probably isn't. That being said, if you don't have a problem with it and aren't losing sleep over it, then let it be.

i know two solutions

finally just give up on Cd's and sell things through napster and the sort

or get rid of music

last one sounds good, haha

I never download illegal music, that's an absolutely horrible thing to do.

It may, if some RIAA goon reads this thread.

I believe the purpose of ripping CDs is to have a backup copy of the purchased works. Since you sold them, I think that you don't have the rights to have that music anymore. Selling it, even at a reduced price, is still trading your property for cash.

In essence, what you did was receive all your music for free, plus getting whatever you made on ebay... doesn't that sound like stealing?
