Static problem....

I got a Pro-ject Xpression MkIII for christmas, and have been having some static problems. The platter is acrylic with a felt pad to go on top. When i take a record off, the felt sticks to it from static which (even though the TT is off) comes through on the speakers.

Is there any way to remedy this?

Please note i am a student and have very little money so i can't afford any expensive treatments.

On the cheap ....
A)Get a room humidifier,it's dry this time of year. Maybe you could find a working unit at a local thrift store.(Don't forget to look for some vinyl while your there)
B)Get a anti-static carbon fiber record brush.

Cheers derek,

I do have a "Super Exstatic Carbon Fibre & Felt Disc Cleaning Pad" which i use quite often, but the problem remains.

Is it ok to use an acrylic platter without the felt mat? Or will this damage the records?

Yes you can use it without the felt mat . BUT with the mat removed your VTA will change.

Get yourself a can of static guard and a pillowcase. Put a record on with the needle up (at 45 if you have it). Spray the static-guard on your finger through the pillowcase and drag the pillow case on the record in a slow radial path until you have the record covered lightly. It might take a couple resprays. This will completely stop all static problems for many plays.
