Questions about the toe jam

How do I stop the itching...

But seriously now, this will be the first head-fi meet-up I attend, and I have a few questions. Um, can someone give me a rundown of what happens? We hear speeches or just walk around trying stuff or what? Obviously, I know people will have gear for the rest of us to try out. I am no expert at any of this and still consider myself a newbie slowly escalating the head-fi ladder. One of the biggest questions I have is, how is equipment auditioned? Do we take a number, or just ask? Can we use some of the equipment to test out on our own (let's suppose I take my mp3 player and amp and want to try someone's HD650's that they have hooked up to their rig, are we allowed to, well, disconnect the cans and try them out from our portable source?) To those who take their own sources, can we take our own CD's and audition your rig with them? I know I have a lot of questions, but I am truly excited with this event.

Also, are there live performances by... anyone? Members? Do we go out to some jazz club or something later on?

Give me a rundown, if possible!

Most importantly, WHAT ISN'T ALLOWED?

Well, toe jam is definitely not allowed.

What a way to go with CanJam being your first meet! Meets tend to be pretty casual with walking around, finding a rig you want to listen to and having a seat. CanJam is basically a very large meet. Sometimes you'll have to wait a bit to hear a certain rig, but I've never been to a meet where I didn't get the chance to hear whatever I wanted.

As far as bringing your portable gear to try out with different headphones, that should be no problem, but it never hurts to ask the member whose headphones you want to borrow if he or she is around. Common courtesy is the rule. The only things that would freak me out are hair gel/products (you won't be listening to my R10s with hair gel on), general cleanliness, and people who grab, twist, set down roughly, and crank the volume and leave it. Just remember that people really care for their gear, and regardless of your own habits, you should add a dose of extra respect when handling others' stuff. Also, there will be lots of vendors in attendance, so any headphone you might be interested in will probably be available to try.

As to the extras, there will be a Two Shot Minimum DIY Panel Discussion, and a couple other things are in the works. We have live music planned for Saturday night along with a dinner, but remember, the fun of meets is meeting other head-fiers. The hotel is laid out for a party. The Florida crew is known for....uh....well...nevermind, but suffice it to say, it will be hard for anyone to not have a good time.

Look forward to meeting you!

I guess I will become part of the Florida crew, seeing as to how I literally live in the same county as the meet (basically the only reason I can make it!). Haha!

Oh, by the way, does security allow me to bring my camcorder gear? I'd like to record parts of the meet. I'd like to set it up on a tripod and just capture parts of the meet, with the high possibility of doing a video montage of the whole thing later on. Is this doable? Anyone up for some interviews? Let's make this one special! Show everyone how Florida gets down!

Cameras and camcorders are welcome. You might want to ask the camera shy prior to aiming, but part of fun of meets is taking pics, and it's a way to help let others who couldn't attend join in. I always enjoy the impressions threads of meets that have both pics of gear and people.

Local guy....hmmmm.......we will be looking for volunteers, ya know....

its a huge room, with a bunch of people who have their rigs setup and ready. People all sit around, wait for listening time, talk about stuff....normally headphones, but not always =)

I like to normally wear a hat...i dont want my hair to get caught in someones R10s (hint Boom's). I also ask to take pics of people before hand...im sure its ok to take pics of their rigs, however some are camera shy.

Also there shouldnt be a problem bringing your own CD's to listen to, but be sure to ask someone before you open up their CDP and swap CD's. Its also important to ask someone before you take their item to test with yours.

Treat every single item as carefully as possible...try not to kink wires, bend, knock stuff over etc etc...place things down very carefully and hang up their cans if they have a stand.

Overall, have fun, listen and talk headphones....

Oh, most definitely! Let me know what I can do. I get out of work kind of late though, since I work in downtown Miami and drive back up to the Miramar area... but I'd like to help out if you guys need help.

do the vendors usually bring product to sell and, if so, what are the prices like?

i live in orlando and want to know if anyone is interested in car-pooling and/or doing the "share a room" thing. what is the best way to go about getting this info to everyone?

This question is a couple weeks old but I thought I'd go ahead and address it. I don't know of any vendors who will be bringing fresh product for sale. All of them will be flying in and probably aren't set up for point of sale. They're more interested in you hearing their new and established products and placing orders after the weekend. Most of the amp builders work on a build-on-demand basis so expect a short wait. Headphone manufacturers present would direct you to an online or local representative or possibly their own website. There may be some tweak or cable companies who could have some things to sell but I don't know of any so far.

However, if you hear something you really like, you can always ask if the owner is willing to sell. I don't think anyone would take offense to such a request, if anything it should be flattering. Some of my best gear has come from deals made at meets.
