Does it have anything to do with "Apogee Duet" or "Duet" is the currently most popular brand name?

I dunno, the older Squeezebox seems to appeal more to me.

Does this one have any benefits over the other? It has wireless G support which is great, but it still has a maximum sample rate at 48kHz

They need to drop the price of the regular wireless squeezebox if they want to get more people into it. Most people are blowing their $250 on a wii.

I don't like the idea of putting the screen on such a small device to be honest. I like the SB3 which shows just the right amount of info on the screen and I use a 12" tablet pc as my remote control - works a treat!

This might be nicer with headphone setup.

I have squeezebox connected to headphone amp next to my bed, and that would be more convenient if I could have the display in my hand.

You can get the headless receiver alone for $149 folks:

Squeezebox Receiver Network Music Player: Listen to the music you love in any room in your home

Hook it up to a Mac Mini through the ethernet cable or your music server through the wi-fi and you've got a killer system. I've already got the controller (beta tester ), so I'm good to go. The new receiver has Wolfson DACs supplying the 6Vpp analog output, or you can use the S/PDIF or toslink digital outputs. While everyone else is clamoring for the new Wadia device, this little gem from Slim Devices/Logitech is the real star on the home audio front at CES.

Obey the brick!
The remote does not look too ergonomic. We need more such systems regardless.

I love the SB3 and I often wish it displayed more info (album art etc) on the screen, but I really don't see what this does for me at $400. I guess I'll have to wait to see what this does for the real world experience.

Well I have to admit I'm kinda disappointed this (I played with the controller at an old Logitech/SlimDevices event though they wouldn't talk about it at all thus keeping the mystery going) isn't a remote control for existing players. I was under that assumption all this time. Thus as a new system it is kinda mute for me personally, but as a Sonos competitor (multi-room system) for the market it's an interesting product.

Here's a short video at CES.

I've been a beta tester for the jive remote for the past 6 months or so, and I use it with a SB3. So, I think you're wrong about that. Basically, the controller controls SlimServer (duh), so of course, it should be able to control a Squeezebox, in addition to the new hardware.

Okay, thanks for the correction ezkcdude. Strange that's not listed on the Duet product page or CES coverage. I just ran through all the product pages and it is listed on the Squeezebox Controller page, just not on their home or main product page. Effectively that makes it a $300 remote for existing SB3 owners, which I suppose puts it way out of the price range of most of us, but it good to know it's an option. Also good for those that need a headphone jack on the controller (temporary situations, etc.) - if I understand that feature correctly.

So I can just use the receiver wirelessly to connect to my stereo without a screen for the 170? How is the DAC?

Well, need the controller to control it. I think the idea is that you get one controller, and then add as many headless guys as you need for each stereo system you have. If you only have one stereo, then a single SB3 probably makes sense. However, if you have two or more systems, getting the controller plus a couple of headless receivers would start to make more sense than getting multiple SB3's. The DAC on the receiver is Wolfson, but not sure which model. The analog output is 6Vpp, which is unusually high for a consumer device. Standard CD output is around 2V. So, that should make for a pretty darn good sounding device. Moreover, it has both coaxial and toslink digital outputs.

What I don't like is that now, if you don't have wireless, you don't have control. I use my SB3 wired and when I don't want the hassle of turning on the tablet, I can just use the IR remote. From what I hear, the remote is wi-fi only so no wireless network = no play.
