Getting the most out of your hardware

Thread Starter
Although 'optimal' settings depend on what gear you have, could anyone suggest some pointers for setting up your software to give you the best performance/sound quality that will relate to most set-up (ie external dac-headphone combo like emu 0404 usb-hd595). Is there a particular good (as far as SQ) way to set up foobar. What about the dac-usb interface...

How does sample rate change things?
Sync source vs internal source?

Buffering rate?

Also, now that i'm using foobar the cracks and pops that happen when I surf the web have become somewhat less noticeable but they are still there. My cpu usage goes up to around 30 percent when doing these things. ANyone know how to tell your comp to give priority for audio/foobar? I don't notice the problem when i'm not surfing the web, nor do i when looking at youtube/other sites. Fixing this would be extremely helpful. Would doign kernal streamign instead of asio fix this?

Lastly, can someone link me to a download Modified Navigator Columns UI Configuration for foobar or a site that has suggestions. I've been trying to set it up all day and haven't made much progress. I'm looking for a pretty display with album art and the ability to pick artist in folders (without scrolling) and then album/ songs.

thanks! hope others find this thread helpful...can't wait to get this all set up for good....then i can stop spamming these these threads with questions and start providing ansewers hehe

Dropouts are caused by the way USB works in Windows; it was designed for devices that didn't have a high amount of timing-critical data (ex. printer, mouse, keyboard). Have you tried greatly increasing the buffer size in Foobar for the ASIO device and/or with the Output slider?

Other than that, your options are:

1. Upgrade your computer.
2. Don't multi-task, or accept that you'll experience drop-outs if you do.
3. Use the 0404 USB's digital inputs instead of USB (this requires digital output from another sound card).
