New games have stopped making use of the soundcard to process sounds.

If it's true, that's not too surprising... I've found that a lot of games convey spatial information well even without the use of EAX. It was only a matter of time until these calculations could be offloaded to the main CPU with negligible performance costs.

Are you sure that all major new releases don't have EAX? If so, that would be a significant blow against the X-Fi brand.

The end of soundblaster kingdom?
Anyway, thanks for your input guys
I decided to keep my X-FI for time being.

Don't forget that things like the HagUSB that use the USB interface are limited to 48khz sample rates. If you get digital out in a different form, that limit will get bumped to 96khz or higher.

I'm afraid it's not this simple. There's the small matter of timing errors, or jitter. This is why some USB converters are more expensive than others. Also support for 24/96.

Yes, both with analog and digital outputs. The Audigy 2 has forced resampling and is not capable of bit-perfect digital output.

I can vouch for that. I have heard the Empirical Audio gear and it is the real deal. So very hard to describe, but so very musical. Just save your dollars for the good stuff!
