Upgraded: HD600 stock cable -> HD650 stock cable -- sounds worse?!

post #1 of 12
Thread Starter
I just got a new HD650 stock cable in from SennheiserUSA to use in my HD600s and the sound so far is oddly enough, more dull and veiled sounding. Is there a break-in period for the stock HD650 cable? I'm not sure what the problem is. I'm also using a generic Radio Shack 1/4 to 1/8 adapter.. not sure if that is degrading the sound or not. Anyway, this is confusing thus far. Input appreciated.

Why should there be a problem?

There's no magical answer here (and it's certainly not cable burn-in), there's not much to "fix". It's a cable.

You don't like it --> Return/Sell it.

give it some time. if you still don't like it after a while, sell. people are always looking for senn cables, even stock ones.

I have never noticed a difference between the 580/600 and the 650 cable. The 650 is just far more durable I am glad they are replaceable as I have gone through 4 cables so far.

.........Right! Explain why? Gauge of wire? Type of copper used? Sorry my ears detect no difference and I have given 100's of hours on both styles of cable and still there is no "subtles" difference!

Sorry you don't detect difference ...

When we detect difference easily, it's a expensive path ...

If you don't .. stay with your stock cable and enjoy.

I will qualify my cable's tests as:
1= worst and 10 = best ...

1 = HD580 cable
4 = HD650 cable
7.5 or 8 = My friend's cable ... (around 70$ in parts)
10 = Equinox LE cable

One thing is sure, what my ears tell me...

And I can tell you that there is a big difference between the HD580 cable and the HD650 cable. Obviously, the HD650 cable is the best of both. By the way, I've heard the «Equinox LE» cable and it has a good step ahead on the HD650 cable.

I've made these tests with two headphones the HD580 and the HD650. The sound quality was improve on both headphones in correspondance with the quality of the cable.

One more thing, we understand that the HD650 headphone is the best of both.

That's a good part of my reason for switching too. It just seemed like a better cable in terms of durability. I don't know if I heard a difference in switching...I never really tried comparing. Just plugged the 650 cable in, never looked back.

Maybe your equipment at this point in time, is not that capable of revealing the differences in cable? (if it is as so apparent, as the previous posts have said)

I switched the stock cable of my then HD-580 with the HD-650 cable long ago. Though I did hear a difference back then, it was subtle (typical when it comes to cables) and there were trade-offs in the sound, ie. not necessarily improving in all areas. Here is my short description of my finding.

Cheers!

I doubt it. I have decent enough gear.
