The intermittent cutting off could be due to the internal strain reliever inside the cups. What they normally do in headphones is to tie the wire into a knot inside the ear cups before it exits the hole. This knot is put there so that when you tug on the wire, the stress is not on the solder joints, but on the knot instead. After some years, the wire inside the knot area might break. Solution is to remove the knot, tie a new one and resolder to the drivers again.
I don't know if your AKG headphone uses this same method of strain relief. Fitz would be the best person to go to, he is the AKG expert here on Head-Fi.

Its quite simple really, I just rescued a pair of JVCs last week with the same problem. The left driver had this problem.

Re-terminating the 3.5mm plug it the easiest part. :P
