Most LEDs will light with low current, the rating is just a maximum. You can toy around with a 50K potentiometer until you get the ballance of current and brightness that you want.

Green and blue LEDs will look brighter than red or yellow LEDs, our eyes are just more sensitive to the region of light that the green/blue are in.

Exelent point. I think we see about 630nm (greenish) best. I would have gotten ablue or white LED, but there were no low-current versions I could find at Digi-Key.
