Going to be very difficult though. I doubt Sennheiser will attempt a closed statement headphone when they have not released a really good closed sounding headphone in the past. In addition, it is a lot more difficult to design and manufacterer an excellent sounding closed headphones like the R10 and L3000.

Yea....... but who knows how long they have been working on this. 2 years, 5 years, 20 years? I would think that with that much R&D put into it, they could pull off an R10 or better.
It's do'able.

I wonder if they'd ever market their own headphone amp? And a headphone optimized for it?

Alternately, they could put their own badge on a GS Solo or a Lehmann BCL or something - it happens in the car world all the time.

Beyerdynamic makes an amp now - comes with orange bumpers as an option, I believe. Pretty.

Theres been a few piezoelectric headphones. One of them sounds not too bad actually.

Because of the amplification issues with piezos, amts and stats vs moving coils though, I think that if Senn do go for a not moving coil it might be an ortho. I don't think that they ever made any money out of the HE60 and HE90.

If they do release a new flagship can (which I'm pretty sure they will), it will be of the dynamic type or something similar. There is no money in electrostats for them. You need a special amp to power those and very very few people own them. There would only be a market for them to certain people on Head-Fi which certainly does not represent the mainstream.

Very interested in what Sennheiser has planned. I own a lot of Sennheiser phones and I have been happy with all bar the HD595 which I just did not like for classical music.

I am in the market for a higher end phone in 2008 to usurp my HD555 and it sounds like at worst, a discounted HD650 will be a contender.

It better be a new flagship dynamic. The HD-650/600 is 15 year old technology. They can't have been sitting on their behinds all this time!

I know the 650s are amazing sounding, but another flagship would really bring them back as Kings on the scene Maybe a new "King Of Dynamics" will be born Move over R10....you're too expensive! hehe.

Here is something that I don't get, so I am hoping that someone here more knowledgeable can enlighten me.

I have gathered that especially for headphones (but also for a lot of electronics as well) the cost is not so much in the materials to make the product, but in the RD that went into developing the product. So since the RD is already done on something like the HE60/90 and the R-10, why not trickle dow the design into a more affordable form. Take the R-10 and substitute less expensive but sonically equivalent materials (to the leather and wood used), and put it out for $600-800. Or the HE 60/90 (which doesn't appear to use any especially costly external materials) and put those out at the same price point or lower if possible. I would think that the resulting volume of sales would make up for the lower margins on each unit. Anyway, that's my thinking. Am I missing something with this line of thought?

At current prices, I am not expecting to own an R-10 or HE 90 anytime soon. But for $800 each it would be a lot more do-able. And I'd have my R-10 and/or HE 90ish clone and Sennheiser would have $800-1600 that it didn't have before.

ldj325, the problem is overhead. You have to staff the operation, tool up, market, and so on. If you cannot sell enough units to cover the overhead, then the item will lose money.

I seem to remember another speculation thread many moons ago where Tyll said he visited the Sennheiser mothership and saw a few things. Seem to remember that he said electrostats were off the table and that they were working on something other than a dynamic. So I get the feeling that we might have an ortho, AMT, or maybe some other sort of planar. Suppose a true ribbon would be too much to ask for. All of these would be driven by most amps, as well.

Each time they upgrade their top-of-the-line dynamic (580/600/650), they get more laid back. If they remain on this course, I'm not interested. If they open up their sound and rock a little, I'll be there.

Whatever it is, I hope it's closed. Other than that, I don't much care about the technology, just so long as it sounds better than what's out there now.

Affordable is always helpful as well.

I'd love to see a headphone that sounds somewhere between the 600s and 650s - a little brighter but retaining that lovely bass.
