It seems to me that for the last few years Sennheiser has been sticking to the Stax party line, "if it sells, don't fix it." Stax haven't updated their Lambda line despite it having a driver housing that was outdated 30 years ago. The HD600 is still considered one of the best headphones out there in the industry, while the HD650 is still competitive with other audiophile-oriented headphones, and while it stays that way, I doubt Sennheiser will do anything.
Where they're lacking is in IEMs, and of course there's always room for more closed, DAP-friendly headphones to rival the Triports, especially since Sennheiser actually has the name recognition to stock their headphones in Best Buy and the like. Sure, I would love a new flagship headphone, or an electrostatic headphone, or something with a new and unexpected driver technology, but let's get real. Sennheiser are a market-driven company, and the market doesn't need any of that. Oh, and they lost a ton of money on every HE90 sold, so what's the point of making a statement product when you don't need to make any more statements about your quality and brand prestige? P.S. I sure hope to be proven wrong. If I am, you can guess what I'm buying. |
