good portable ipod speakers? 200-300$

Hello everyone,
My mom just called asking if I could advise her about portable ipod speakers for my father for xmas. She said she went to a store and the bose sound dock sounded the best. I trust her ears, she is a classically trained violinist for years and years.

But she knows how I feel about bose so she called me up

The Bose sound dock costs 400, but knowing bose there are probably better for less out there. Anyone have any recomendations? I suggested ducktaping a pair of M-audio studio monitors together (150$)

it would be nice if it had a dock, but not necessary. price up to 400, but 200-300 would be nice. Battery operation is not necessary. its a plus if its optional though. it will be used mostly in the backyard.

Thanks!

I use a Tivoli PAL radio with an iPod for bedside listening. It has a 1/8" aux in on the back (an iPod LOD gives a clean connection), a built-in rechargeable battery (10-12 hours), and comes with a wall wart.
It is a mono speaker (single driver), but that one speaker does some magic.
Tivoli also has specific Ipod portable systems that are more costly, but which I haven't heard.
Take a look at some reviews. The designer Henry Kloss knows a thing or two about audio design.

No contest

AudioEngine A2 for $199....or the A5 for $350. No brainer. See Stereophile's Review of the A2 on their website.

if you're getting Audioengine 2 or 5 make sure you have speaker stand
Otherwise they won't sound normal.
