"and "bright" the highs to get more exciting sound."
That's the kind of approach that I avoid. If you "tune" your frequency response or transients with a cable for one amp, or one source, or a set of CDs, then later, you may find yourself regretting it if you change equipment.
I've found the HD650 are much more neutral than the rap they get around here. My three amps and two sources all sound good through them, eminently neutral with all kinds of music, particularly after removing the foam and upgrading to Cardas cable, and with my better amps (most recently, a WA6 with a rectifier chosen to give neutral wide bandwidth rather than "tubey" midrange emphasis).
The cable didn't "tilt" the frequency response or "sharpen" or anything of the sort. It simply revealed more of what was on the source. No editorializing.
Now I realize this distinction between "editorial" cables and "transparent" cables is hard to do in practice. But one can try.
