Eargasm - w K701, Tell me your amp preferences? (Tubes amp?) - Page 2

I agree that if you recable the k701's, go balanced with an adaptor cable. It's not as easy to recable K701's so go all the way in preparation of the future. =T

I will burn in my K701 for another 200 hours, and see what will happen.
meanwhile, is there any more suggestions on higher end amps?

Darkvoice 337 is getting lots of positive review especially with the AKG's.

Darkvoice 336i works well with K701, too. Bada PH-12 is even better! : )

I use Moon Audio black dragon cables. These headphones work wonderfully well with my Clue Circle SBH, SinglePower MPX3 SLAM SE and Mapltree Audio HD+ Purist (or something like that).

yamamoto ha-02. the k701 sounds very "un-k701-like"...mids are accentuated, adds a bit of warmth, and becomes a much more involving and intimate headphone. this was using the DA100 as a source. i liked the yamamoto pairing better than the GS-1 with the k701.

I used my K701s with a Graham Slee Solo MC and they sounded very nice indeed...though i did have to crank the power up pretty high to drive them at volume.

They were pretty hard to drive even with my Grham Slee Solo so i wouldn't think so.

Thank you for the input, guys

I was in love with "Graham Slee 'Green' solo" before, but someone offer me a heed with an offer that I can't refuse. So if I buy a "Green" solo, I would think this as a small margin of upgrade, beside I heard Green solo works better with low impedance headphone such as my Denon D2000, and hardly synergies with K701.

Meanwhile, I'm starting to save money to get better amp/source later on, but I came back to the place where I got confused before.

Get a tube amp or get another solid-state amp?
Yamamoto HA-02 is currently my only preference for a tube amp, but I never heard anyone here using it with K701 (except 'kugino' above), and I assume it only works with Audio Technica headphones or even the mainstream HD650.

Darkvoice 337, is a huge beast - but since I tested DV336i and I lost my interest completely on Darkvoice product (tested with D2000), but will K701 scale well with this DV337?

Corda Opera was my dream amp, and maybe still...
but have anyone here, ever pair it with K701? does opera still introduce the warmth and close soundstage that offered by it's mini brother, Corda Headsix?

The rest, like BADA PH-12, Singlepower PPX3, WA6. It's way complicated - esp Singlepower & WA6 - where there is too much configuration/upgrade, which I think it's very essential and if I add the whole upgrade, that would cost me double the budget, not including a source.

Lastly, as I need new source, Ori introduce me to his new headamp product, which I heard from some head-fier here, that were very good, compared to his GS-1. So I done some research & study, the new headamp is an upgrade to the infamous OMZ v4 DAC. So anyone here own/ever heard OMZ DAC paired with K701?

You give the K701's at least 1500hours; you’re gona to be left with one of the most beautiful presentations you may ever come across.
A FOB K701 has nothing on a well burnt in pair.. NOTHING!

If someone came'a knocking offering me $5000 for my old ~7000+ hour K701’s. I’d slam the door in there face. No lies!

I also think Rudi amps treat 701’s very nice.

Maybe you should try some "premium" tubes on that 336i. It will bring that amp to life, I promise.

Tubes like the 5998, and "Bad Boy" come to mind.. (my current tube combo)

One amp of special note. That makes the 701's sing. That make either current hungry. Or Voltage hungry Cans sing for that matter. Is the Lisa XP with matching LLP. A cut above the ordinary. To be sure. I've only had it for three day's. Still burning in. But it really shined from the flip of the switch.

None. The best K701 is a silent K701.

The K701 and probably all AKG phones ship with a very sorry cable. In addition, the single entry point design runs the audio across to the opposite can, using the metal supports as conductors. It's streamlined and confortable but far from best sounding.
Re-cable your K701 and it doesn't matter which cable you choose. I'm not saying there are no differences between after-market cables, but I'd expect any of them to outperform the original cable.
I've listened to a K701 with a 20 ft long SAA cable. I'm talking real long!
After about 10 hours, the sound was very dynamic and tonally uniform. Compared to a HD-650, the K701 is bass shy, but to my taste I consider it more neutral. If you're a bass freak, there are better choices. If you listen to classical/jazz then the K701 is hard to beat. I compared it to a K1000 with SAA cable, using similar bass-light music. The K701 has more body and gives a fuller picture. K1000 has its own advantages in imaging, but I couldn't get over the lack of body. It's analogous to a mini-monitor speaker system, which might sound absolutely stunning due to its "point source feel", leading to time coherency and excellent spatial realism. Only when you go to a quality full-range floor-standers that you can tell how much is missing.
The K701 is up there with the best. I've heard it against modded K340 and it seemed to resolve complex music better. I compared it extensively against my HD650, which I don't dislike... But the K701 is superior overall. Vocals are clear and metalic sounds are just right, without any exageration of any part of the audio spectrum that I can tell. Truly great phones at an amazing price!

For 575$ you can have your very own Yamamoto HA-02 from Venus Hi-Fi as a end of year special. No I am not associated except for being a happy owner of one.
