Cleaning Vinyl ???

How often should vinyl be cleaned?

As needed . . . or say once a year, every six months? or ???

If you have a record cleaning machine and you're willing to buy nice sleeves then you should only have to clean your records once. After that you can just use a record brush to get off the surface dust before you play a record.

Same here except I don't use a cleaning machine yet. I wash them in the sink and drop them into a decent sleeve. You only need to wash them once if you keep fingerprints and dust off it. I recommend running a brush over the disc before and after playing every time, though. Only takes a second, removes any dust on the record and helps keep your stylus lean.

Rinse them with distilled water and wipe them off with MicroTex microfiber cloths, conveniently available in the automotive section of your local wamart. Record is ready for immediate playing. Microtex microfiber clothes are probably the best 'tweak' I've even done involving my vinyl setup.

Also go to audiokarma and go to the vinyl section. Huge discussion on cleaning records.

The MicroTex towels are also great for a final cleaning right before playing. I hit the LP with the Zerostat, then the carbon fiber brush and finally the MicroTex. It really keeps things quiet.

I don't wash my factory-sealed LPs unless I hear troubles on the first play, which happens seldom. Generally, the Zerostat/Carbon Fiber/MicroTex does the job. The carbon fiber brush gets off any big, loose pieces so that I don't rub them in and the MircroTex seems to really grab hold of the grooves and clean very thoroughly.

Those micro tex towels paired up with Disc Doctor fluid seem to be popular as well.

I have never tried it though.
