Need help with speaker alignment, setup etc.

So first off. Yeha I finally have a decent stereo!

Everything works fine and detail is tremendous now. I just need to know how to get the balance of the sound stage right. It sounds like it is but how can I test to get a positive center. Meaning voices are where they are supposed to be.

Use a mono recording to place the width between the speakers properly. It should sound like it's solid all the way across, with no left or right to the sound. Ideally, this is about six to eight feet apart.

Keep the speakers a foot or two out from the wall. Raise them to as close to ear level as possible. Point them straight ahead, not angled out or inwards.

Hope this helps

You can toe them in up to ~15 degrees. Otherwise you'll never hear them on axis.

This could be a long post....and I have little time.

First, contact the manufacturer for their suggestions. Some speakers "like" toe-in, some don't. Also it's simply a personal taste issue. I generally like a good bit of toe-in (but didn't on my Dunleavy SC4)...and sitting just slightly within an equilateral triangle in terms of distance. Example: if speakers are 7 feet apart, sit 6-ish feet away.

I would place them equally, *at least* two feet into the room (depending on room size). As a starting point, try 1/5th the length of the room. If your speakers are firing down the long wall (as they *generally* should be)...and that room is 20 feet long, place the speakers 4 feet into the room. There's no substitute for experimentation.

*Unequal* distances from side walls will help too.

In your case...placing the subwoofer will be key imo...and require a good bit of experimenting. Can't get into that right now, but maybe google subwoofer placement. Check out the REL (!!!) or Hsu Research websites for tips. For music listening, to get a sub to "disappear" ain't easy. For starters, stay away from corners! Stereophile.com forums could be a great resource for you.

If you have to toe in your speakers, you probably have them too far apart.

See ya

Not necessarily, it depends on the design of the speaker.

Anyway...
spacemanspliff, First try what the manufacturer suggests. What speakers are we dealing with?

Here's a couple of interesting setup methods.

TAD 805s. Tube Audio Design. They are 8" single drivers with a 1/10th tweeter up top in a crossover-less design. The cabinet is curved just so. I think I have them pretty well set apart and in accordance to the builders requirements. Paul said he had them set up the same just that he had no walls behind them in a big ass room. They need to be further into the room but the prob is that the room is small. The sub certainly needs tweaking but I believe it all has to come forward away from the wall.

I have to say that the Ori Dac with the Tad 60 amp is giving amazing results. Detail is off the charts. Better than even my SR-Lambdas but not quite as fast. The highs are as musical and natural sounding as it gets lol.
