Since they are closed, they are much more punchy than an open headphone. Definitely great for those genres.

Closed in sound is better for rap-hiphop. Some of the atmospherics in dubstep might benefit from an open sound but I wouldn't sweat it.

I have the Q40s and was wondering whether it would be possible to transplant the drivers into a different body? Anybody have experience with this?

It shouldn't be that bad if you can get them out cleanly and have a donor shell with similarly shaped hole in the baffle. What shell are you thinking?

Probably some fake beats pros.

Before transplanting drivers and wrecking the Q40, I'd try some damping for the Beats first.

From what I've read (NOT first hand knowledge) the Beats are not comfortable.  With pad rolling the Q40's pretty darn comfy................

It's cool seeing the creativity of Head Fiers doing all this tweaking and testing.  I love it.  I'm in the midst of doing an Alpha pad swap onto my Pro900's.............and from initial testing makes the headphone sound amazing.

The drivers are only one aspect that contributes to a headphone's sound. The same drivers can sound very different in different enclosures, with different pads, etc. So while you can definitely try transplanting the Q40 drivers into other shells, you run the risk of it sounding much worse than the stock Q40.

Got another mod for you Q40 lovers.  Mr Speakers Alpha Pads are a nice fit on these phones, increases the comfort exponentially and helps with the already wonderful bass.

$59 gets you lamb leather bliss....................

Does the sound quality change? And how did their bass change?

Quality improved as the isolation is better.  Bass seemed deeper and cleaner, again because of the isolation of the pads I'm sure.

I don't like the idea of angled pads on a headphone that doesn't have angling capabilities though. One side of the pad would have more pressure on it than the other. Damn you Q40's! Y U NO SWIVEL?!

I guess that may be a slight cause for concern. Maybe. You could put a spacer on the skinny side under the pad to minimize the issue.

So after three weeks with Alpha pads on my Q40 I am positive these are the best of the 10 pads I've tried on the Q40's.

Anyone else try them yet? Worth it.

This question excludes RPG Wizard as I know you won't try them. biggrin.gif
