Last.fm bitrate?

what is the bitrate of the music on last.fm? it sounds pretty good to my fairly untrained ears but some tracks do seem a bit lacking compared to what i have on my hard drive (320kb/s mp3 mostly). so does anyone know what the bitrate of last.fm is?

Don't know off-hand, but a possibly easy way of finding out for yourself is to use something like NetTransport or GetRight, and download the file. You can then check using your favourite media player.

IIRC, its around 192kbps mp3's. Try downloading some of the free tracks.

I remember reading somewhere that it's 128.

Wonder if this has changed. Sounds good to me on my new office setup. I still have to get some lossless or high quality mp3 files on my portable. I just heard Irma Thomas do "Time Is On My Side"...sounded pretty wonderful.

It was 128kbps MP3 until April 2008. They now use 64kbps HE-AAC.

I don't think it sounds as god as it used to, but at half the bitrate (albeit with a codec that does well at low bitrates) what can you expect?

Wow, it's surprisingly good for a 64kbps stream though..

I'm trying to settle on a codec for my iPhone. I'm new to apple and use mostly .ape files and some .flac at home. I had been using 320 CBR mp3 on my Cowon D2. I think I'll explore AAC and ALAC this weekend.

Neville Brothers (Aarron Neville) sound quite clear, but they always have good recordings anyway.

i just checked. it seems to be 128kbps mp3. well at least the 30 second previews of songs are, it wouldnt let me download a full track.

I settled on 256kbps AAC. Sounds pretty good.

Pandora subscription is at 196kbps. You should try MOG:

I just started listening to streaming audio on my pc a couple of weeks ago. I'm not thrilled w/ Rhapsody, Napster or Last.fm, as they have so many darn restrictions on what can be played, when it can be played and they have too many 'preview' clips. I have not tried Slacker, but I am enjoying MOG and Pandora.

MOG All Access Tour

MOG:

1) Most streams are at 320kbps, some at 256kbps.

2) You type in an artist and it creates a radio station that only plays that artist, not just 3 songs/x plus other artists you don't like. Want to add more artists to the station? Just move the slider over and you get more artists.

3) Fast/Easy search. Playlist searches can be performed on multi-artist groupings.

4) Social music networking. Links to pages of others who play artists you like.

5) 3 million song lyrics, which can be accessed from the main screen while tracks are playing.

6) Many of the All Music Guide reviews are available, along with other reviews.

7) $5 per month, they offer a free 3-day trial. (Downloads are via Amazon)

I'm not sure how many titles they have, but I have not encountered any 30 second 'preview' clips that you get w/ Napster and Rhapsody.

i just got an audiograbber program today, mp3mymp3, and played with it a little on last.fm, i tried capture at 64 and 128 kbps, playback of the 64 sounded a bit hollow, 128 sounded ok, so as of january 2011, i'd say they're playing 128kbps.
