We will not be stocking the Slim Devices Transporter units. We are only offering our custom modification to customer supplied units.
He means 3595.00 including the cost of Transporter.

My point was that you can buy a TP at discount , 1500.00. send it ti Modwright and spend 1595 for the mod.

Look on AudioCircle in the Modwright forum to verify that pricing.
There are also pics of the insides.

Most of the modders are pretty shady but MW actually seems to do a lot and they also makr original equipment.

That said, the TP, especially balanced out, sounds so good I think it is better to put the money elsewhere. A tube preamp will get all the tubiness one needs w/o the extra expense of the mod.

Definitive XRCD vs 24bit/96Khz Review of Erick Friedman Violin Show Piece

I have the XRCD version and I think its one of those most well mastered/recorded CDs I have. It's got the XRCD2, and the 20bitk2 processing.

I downloaded the 24/96 tape transfer version from HighDefTapeTransfers

WOW what a difference 24/96 tape transfer makes; the high def tape transfer made the XRCD version sounds like mp3!!!

Soundstage is greatly improved in the 24/96 version. The soundstage instead of stopping at a imaginary 'brick wall', now extends far far far beyond. All the instrument seems to have the real reverberation, and air around them (like in a real concert hall!!).

The sound of the high quality tape transfer just sounds more relaxed, more analog, much more smooth. Erick's violin took on a new life. Not just 'hi-hi' sounding in the XRCD version (a little grainy I might add), but 'real life' sounding. Smooth yet real, detailed without feeling edgy. The whole performance took on an ease I have only experienced with real instruments.

One noticeable area the XRCD substantially differs from the tape transfer is a mid-bass hump that's present in the XRCD version and not in the tape transfer version.

I think this is the best example of high def vs CD (in this case XRCD). If there is this much difference between a 24/96 tape transfer and XRCD (presumably much better mastered than regular CD), I am 1000% sold on the 24/96 format. THERE IS NO CONTEST.

I used SD TP to cue up both versions of the same track and just compared them back to back to back to back, the difference is obvious and amazing.

Update: I cued up the XRCD in the Rega Saturn and A/B against 24/96 playing back from TP. No surprise there, the TP with 24/96 tape transfer made Saturn sounds like a cheap machine. The difference is much great than the difference between the Linn CD12 and Saturn (yes I compared them with the same XRCD (my default stereo shop demo CD. yes I would also say TP with 24/96 would put Linn CD12 playing XRCD to shame too.

will the above people please DO NOT post in this thread. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION.

What are you five? Grow up. It makes me wonder how someone of your ignorance can afford such gear.

The pricing is ambigous... here's some clarity (hopefully)

The ModWright mods to the Transporter cost $2,000 when you supply the Transporter - NOT the $1,595 quoted previously in this thread.

The $2,000 and "you supply the Transporter" was what Dan's website stated about a month ago before Dan became a Transporter dealer and $2,000 is still the price for modifications. Trust me - I corresponded with Dan earlier today over his changing the playing field after I had ordered a new Transporter elsewhere and shipped it to him for his mods. As he is now a dealer, his package deal including a new Transporter is the quoted $3,595 (he claims he isn't making anything on the Transporter itself). While my timing sucks, I did start this process under the "old rules" and can accept that... too bad he didn't tell me to hold off a week or two so that I could have saved ~$150.

I did get to play with the stock Transporter for a few days before I sent it to Dan. It sounded really good and I can't wait to hear it with the mods.

Heads up to all transporter owners - the firmware 40 is a real treat!

firmware 40 is what SD transporter should have been shipped with from day 1. Gone are the forward midrange and analytical characteristic some associate transporter with, in its place there is this warm, yet realistic characteristic to the sound; now this sounds more like a hi-end player the Stereophile was hinting at in their old review. Balance now sounds much better than SE. amazing what a reprogram of Xillinx can do

One caveat, you really do need a preamp because the digital volume is broken (didn't work on mine).

anyone still playing with these? using TP as pre?

I have posted a few times about certain settings in the Audio menu of the Player tab that anyone with a TP should try.

Tried 7.5.11 and the nightly build 7.6 and now I am back to 7.4.1

My touch is not very happy on SBS 7.4.1 but it works and everything just sound a little less hi-fi and little more real.

I am only using TP as a transport.

I use the nightly updated Beta versions, but I only update about once a week.
