Sony A818 or Cowon iAudio 7

Thread Starter
I was going to ask about these two DAPs...but after reading the A818 output (a measly 5mW+5mW), its not a UMS device, I am not 100% impressed. Compared to the iA7 at 26mW+26mW, it's stellar battery life, FLAC support, it's a UMS/MSC device, 16gb version available..and other things.

I've decided to get the iAudio 7

great

Well....it seems that the 5+5mW output of Sony is actually more capable than it looks... And also i thinks it works as a externall storage device , doesnt it?
In fact i was just going to to raise the same topic because i want to pick one of these two...
In terms of SQ which one you guys think is better?

That is not true, I have heard the Iaudio, and the sound was really detailed, maybe so detailed you would call it metallic and cold but its not, the sound can be really warm, and smooth, but also soooo detailed, and right on.

Cowon mp3 players have some of the best sq and most powerful amps.

I have an X5, I've loved it. I'm probably gonna get an X7 as well

Very Very true LTC....that is exactly the case...

Agreed. I was almost put off by descriptions of the cowon d2 as cold.

I ended up buying it and it is not cold - the Meizu is cold, various pcdps are cold, the cowon is not cold - very detailed yes, but I actually find it a touch on the warm side.

Im going to have to go and dis-agree with you there. My Meizu M6 SP was quite warm.

If you are talking about the SL, well then, I will take your word for it, as I have not personally heard the new SL version.

i have the meizu m6 as well and if you mean by cold, just a more linear sound then yes, it is more linear. the cowon seems to artificially sweeten up the mids. i have the d2, so i am not sure how it compares to the iaudio 7 but it has artificial sweetener there in themids. the meizu seemed to have a more honest bass sound without elevated mids. the warmth that you may experience with the d2 may be an elevated lower mids. overall, the d2 sounds much like a player made to sound good portably while the meizu m6 sounds good as a hifi would.

it also has a 'powerful' amp but it is only a hair more powerful than the ipod amplifier or many other hd based amps at 30mw x2. even at that, 16ohm driven, it often has trouble driving phones. I will admit that is is excellent for higher ohm and lower sensitivity headphones where the extra 6mw per channel do some good.

all this said, i would love to hear the iaudio 7 as some say it is better than the d2 and some say it is worse. i would hope that with all the positives on THIS site about it, that it is better.

Really? Wow - interesting. I found it to be the coldest DAPs I've ever heard. It was really nice though and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Really prefer the D2 tough.
