Low Frequency Effects and Headphones

Thread Starter
I was recently tweaking my DVD player software using DVD Genie and stumbled across the "Use LFE Decoding" option. When playing movies through my speakers and subwoofer, the difference in the low bass sounds is enormous. How safe is it to keep the decoding on while listening through headphones? Could it damage them? I plan on watching movies with either my Senn 580's or my Grado 325's. Thanks.

I think that setting will only work with 5.1+ (DTS,DD, etc.) because it redirects bass to the subwoofer. With the standard L/R channels used for headphones there will probably be no discernable difference, or you will in fact have less bass because it is being redirected to the sub. I'm not sure of this at all; perhaps someone else can confirm before you try it.

If you have some crappy headphones that came with a portable, I would try it out and see if there is a difference before you try it out with something you wouldn't want to lose.

From personal experience, the HD580/600 drivers can produce so much bass safely that your head feels like it's going to implode before there are any bad effects.

The blockhead at low volumes listening to jazz with HD600s is just insane. I really like ranting about the blockhead's totally neutral, insanely detailed, balanced, natural presentation. The bottom end is exactly like it would be in real life, except only the head feels it.

And oh, boy, does the head feel it.

Anyways, back to the point. Don't worry about it, those babies take tons of punishment.

Cheers,
Geek
