Sound Quality of Beosound 6

Thread Starter
I just read this thread in Beoworld:
BeoWorld Bang & Olufsen Forum - Review Beosound-6

Beosound 6 certainly appears to be very attractive to me.

My utter most concern is its sound quality. I have read about 2 reasons for its superior sound quality:
1. BS 6 uses a special algorithm to turn mp3 to cd-quality
2. BS 6 practically combines player + amp. So you need not to use headphone amp to improve sound quality.

Can anyone confirm the above? Is its sound quality significantly better than any other mp3 player in the market?

I tried one at the B&O store near me, and its much better than I was expecting. It certainly seems to be to be more than a rebranded Samsung MP3 to me, and its really beautiful in person.

yes, but it justifies 600 bucks for a relativly small flash player ?

It is a YP-Z5 which uses the sigmatel 3600, therefore it sounds great, but not worth the money. Just buy a refurbished Z5.

1. that is BS, you cannot restore discarded information, no matter what algorithm it's using. Creative claim the same with there X-Fi thingy, BS.

2. All DAP's have amps built in, without one your headphones would not be powered.

Call me a sceptic, but I think you're being fooled by the price.

from that forum :

I was in the B&O shop today and had a look at the BS-6. It is light and lacks the "heft" of the BS-2. My other initial impressions were that:

1. it appears intended for use by right-handed people as I had difficulty using the volume control with my left hand, unlike the BS-2

2. for me, the control buttons of the BS-6 did not have the same tactile feel as the BS-2

3. I did not like the shiny finish which reflected the light into my eyes as I was trying to view the screen

4. I agree with the previous posts about the top of the case not closing completely

5. the BS-6 didn't sound better than the BS-2 -- but I only tested the BS-6 for about 5 minutes[listening to "Maneater", "Close to You" and "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence"]

6. The back side of the BS-6 is labled "Samsung" while the front is "B&O" so if I hold up the BS-6 to use the controls, the people facing me will only know that it is a "Samsung" -- am I being snotty?

read point n. 6 ... that's ridiculous

B&O has never been about value, and never will be.

To answer:
1) B.S. Once you remove the audio data from the source file, it cannot be restored. It only guesses at what would be the best bits to replace the missing ones with.
2) B.S. No portable player has EVER had a good, solid amplification output stage, and this player is no exception.

B.S. for the BS-6

Sound Quality YP-Z5 = beosound 6 ?

Tried it this weekend.
The beosound 6 has a "dynamic sound filter" setting in the menu, the Z5 doesnt. This is apparently an algorithm designed by B&O to fill in some of the frequency range lost during MP3 ripping. It works quite well, similar to the MP enhance on my X5.
So i dont think it sounds just like the Z5 , maybe a little better - it still wasnt as dynamic as the Beosound 2 though.

Luxury items are just that, luxury items that are meant to be payed at premium.

For those who just rip on the BS6 for the sake of ripping on the name, it makes you no different than when you first started the pursuit of the audio journey, being a noob and all.

You should also keep in mind that it comes with a retail $200 ($100 > on eBay) earphone that aren't bad at all. I'd still recommend them as a superb sub-$200 and unamped earbud -- I preferred the A8 to the PK2s.

Bottom line is it sounds great. Is it worth $600? Up to you to decide. I own one and have no regrets.
