ATH-A700 vs ATH-AD700

Thread Starter
I'm finally going to take the plunge and upgrade to a nice pair of headphones for Christmas. I use them mostly for games and movies. I'm wondering how the Audio Technica ATH-A700 compares with the AD-700. I'm guessing closed would be better for games and such?

Also, I noticed the impedance on the A700 is 64 ohms while the AD700 is 32 ohms. Will one or the other be better given that it's being driven only by my computer's sound card (X-Fi xtrememusic)?

edit: How comfortable are the a700s? Additionally, how much of an improvement are the a900s over the a700s?

I have similar questions. Subscribed.

I might be wrong here but I always thought that open phones are better for soundstage and therefore better for gaming b/c thats what you want. As for comfort my ad700 are extremely comfortable, aside from the itchy velor pads, which im hoping to swap out with leather ones.

I have the AD700's and use it mostly for gaming, as well as for general listening purposes. It is great for gaming since the soundstage is pretty wide, and for music purposes it excels in most genres. It could use a little more bass impact though, but I'm fine with the sound on mines. The bass is there, and you can hear it, but it doesn't quite have the punch. It's the smooth mids and highs that stands out in these phones, though.

I heard the A700's have more bass but lesser soundstage. I haven't heard these myself so I can't say much about it.

I used to own the a700's, and i found them to be quite comfortable. However, i sold them and got some beyerdynamic dt770's. Even more comfortable and really worth the extra money. The pads are much better also. The sound card you have should be fine powering them. I watch movies and play xbox 360 un-amped with these and they sound great!

bump

do A700's have more bass then the AD700's?
What's the benefit of one over the other?
are the AD's better for rock/ambient/progressive?

could i wear the AD700's in a library and play them just as loud as the A700's
i'm new to this all :[

Since the AD700's are open design, my guess is probably not, you wont be able to listen to them at loud levels in a library. But I havent heard one myself so I can't be sure.

I have the A700's however and I still think they are one of the best cans I have heard. I really dont find it lacking in soundstage, if anything, it just doesnt have the refinement of the HD650's, but otherwise, it can hold its own.

Yes the A700 have a lot more bass then the AD700.

Based on A900 vs AD900:
Imo the open ATs are better at music, closed are better at gaming, but if i had to choose one i'd go for the open since it does gaming very well too. The hole in the upper bass/lower mids of the A500/A700/A900 can be annoying for rock. The AD700 should be awesome for rock, i love my AD900 for rock

Closed:
More bass
Isolation

Open:
Way better midrange
Smoother treble
Tighter bass (but less quantity)
Wider soundstage (if a bit too wide for gaming?)

Also the Open ATs do leak a little too much for a library imo.

Audio technica ES7? pretty good looking, and the SQ is also good for a portable headphone.
