Furutech DeStat

Well, it's certainly expensive...

However, the performance absolutely slays the Milty Zerostat. That thing is so twitchy that I never felt I was doing it correctly, and the dust on my records prooved that I wasn't.

I was cleaning off some LPs on the Loricraft yesterday, and it's night and day. I live in a really dusty area (Southern California) and for the first time ever, I felt like my LPs weren't dust magnets.

So, the verdict is............... worth it!

i recently picked up a used RD2. decent price. fun to use. haven't done any real A/Bs, but furutech is a pretty science-oriented company. i tend to think that their devices do what they say. i'm sure i'll get around to doing some comparisons of my own, at some point.

So what are the effects of it? Have you noticed anything major?

i just got it a couple of days ago. i've been using it on my CDs, but i haven't done any A/Bs. of course, all the reviews say it does x, y, and z. whether it does any of those things, i don't know and won't know until i sit down one night and start doing some comparisons of mine own. just too busy/lazy now. we'll see. when i get around to it, i'll post something. but it's real easy to use and quick. plus the reviews, not only professional, but on audio forums as well (which sometimes you trust more), have been quite positive.

It's funny... most people have a hard time understanding how it would work on an LP; that part makes total sense to me because the magnetization (according to Furutech, it's in the carbon that is used in LPs) would easily influence something as sensitive as a phono cartridge.

The part I don't understand is how magnetization would affect CDs. Is magnetization able to affect the CD lens? That seems possible, but again, it's going over my head.

If I'm not mistaken, you do digital only, correct? Do you have a friend who does vinyl? I'd be really interested in seeing how it affects vinyl.

Actually, it just occured to me... you have the mini version... will vinyl fit?

Thanks for the updates!

CD/DVD Demagnetization

here is one user review from another audio site, but i found a couple of reviews from users similar to this which gives me some confidence in this device.

The RD-2 simply makes my cd's sound better. Better how?

Increased clarity, dynamics, and a much darker background. After using the RD-2 and listening, it sounds like the volume is turned up and that music is "bigger" sounding (but not in any artifical way). There is also a change in the timbre/tonality of the instruments (most noticeable on brass). It is a little more relaxed and natural sounding.

I had a few friends over today and they were skeptical that this device could do the things I listed above. I played three separate cd's that hadn't gone through the RD-2 (Led Zeppelin Box Set Disc 4 - Moby Dick, Sam Cooke "Night Beat" - Lost and Lookin', Star Wars Original Score, Star Wars Theme). In all cases the guys agreed that there were indeed improvements and by the third cd they were convinced. The RD-2 isn't cheap, but I think it was money well spent.

Have you had similar results?

maybe over the weekend, i do some comparisons. i'll let you know.

edit: i compared one cd. bach concertos by hilary hahn. i listened to a few tracks carefully. treated it. and then listened again. but by the time i did all that - took the cd out, treated it (20 secs each side), put it back in, loaded up the tracks, put on my headphones and adjusted them for comfort, i forgot what i heard previously. so ...

i need to make a few CDRs to do this, so the A/Bing is quicker.

CD/DVD Demagnetization
So what is it in CD's that can become magnetized? Does demagnetizing a CD add more bits? Make the 1s darker? Space out the 0s?

Cool. Hillary Hahn played at the hall where I work... I didn't see her but I wish I did. She packed the place.

Do you like piano? Another good player who came that I'm killing myself for missing is Helene Grimaud. I only started listening to her a few months ago. D'oh!
i don't have any of her stuff, Grimaud. i'm a hahn freak though. she is amazing! this weekend, i'll try to do a better comparison of the RD2.

until then ...
