Sticky?

I think I've been fairly innocent of this thus far, and likewise haven't been taken by overenthusiastic posts even though I do own SE530s.

Yes, i think this thread deserves a sticky as well.

It needs visibility in all of the gear-related forums.

People might be able to make general assumptions as to the way certain gear sounds with headphones of varying impedances, sensitivities and amplification needs. Though in the end it's obviously what you hear, and actual listening impressions that matter the most.

I think boomana hit the nail on the head with the original post.

Not encouraging criticism based on design is a lot more detrimental to the forum than discouraging impressions without experience. We have to be critical of what is sold to us, and it is even more important now in the wake of the Singlepower fiasco and various other MOTs generally cashing in on the goodwill, and if I may say so, ignorance of the community.

But it is a completely different story altogether to pretend that you have the technical knowledge and rely on other people not being knowledgeable enough to shoot you down. That sort of thing is fronting, same as recommending gear without listening, except that it is even more dangerous since it has an air of validity that needs some technical knowledge on part of the reader to dispel. So if this is what you and Elrod-tom meant, then I agree. And, if I may say so, there have been some awfully busy and visible threads lately that have done just that, and should have been deleted.

This is a tricky topic since only a few people are qualified to make sound quality comments based on design, and you have to have some knowledge to even understand who knows what they're talking about and who's full of it. We don't want to mistake the former for the latter - antagonizing people with technical skills is what the community really should try to avoid right now.
Really good post, and I would agree.

I've just seen a few recent posts where people (invariably newer members) recommend gear that I'm pretty sure that they haven't heard so I just thought it's probably time that this thread needs a bump.
Yuppers, this definitely needs to be re-read by people here.
I recommend people to check out gear that ive never heard.....but i tell them i never heard it and where i got my opinion so they can make an informed decision to look into it, not to buy it on anything i say.

Its even better when people with 30 posts and a month here tell me im wrong about something i have owned a few years and everyone agrees with him and jumps all over my advice and the OP follows the uninformed majority. His choice.

I think the Sony R-10s are the bestest headphones in the worlds because they cost a loooooottttt of money.

My logic makes perfect sense and anyone who argues with will be beaten with an organic zucchini.

organic zucchini? LMAO
Are there benefits to being hit with organic vs not organic when it comes to zuccini?
I'm pretty sure that the best way to cure this is

A. Make it a sticky thread/announcement/rule in the headphone/amp/source/computer audio forums.

and

B. More meets, more places, with more people.

This has been being discussed since I started lurking many years ago. So far, the innumerable ranting threads have not changed a thing.

meets is a terrible place to audition gear. private/home audition is the only way to go.
Good luck getting the masses able to do that. For mid-fi, meets are perfectly fine IMHO. Besides, most meets have near-silent rooms just for listening.
