I never understood the need of members with 1 to 3 word responses in an attempt to inflate their post count.
Posts like "X2" or "Awesome"
Totally agree.

Having enthusiasm is fine, but don't be blind or obnoxious about it and do recognize that one manufacturer doesn't necessarily make the best of everything.
umm, no...that's not what i'm getting at. blind enthusiasm is blind enthusiasm and, i thought, the point of this thread. of course i discourage enthusiasm or hate if the poster has not listened to said gear. however, legitimate posts should not be frowned upon because of their brevity nor should it be assumed that it is with the intent of padding post counts.

The problem with enthusiasm, as I've seen on HF on many occasions, is that it does become blind and grows to a point where it shouldn't. Saying a product is really good and you like it a lot is fine,, but more often then not, there are also other qualifiers that should not be made along with that.

"The K701 is the best headphone in the world, it's perfect and I've never heard anything better!!!"

"What other headphones have you heard?"

"My stock iPod earbuds"

"And based on this you conclude there's nothing better than the K701?"

"How could it get any better?"

there's always going to be fanboys!

w00t w00t!

but seriously, recommending gear you've never heard is fine up to a certain point... like if a person was asking for an open pair of fun portable headphones for under ~$50, would it be so bad that i were to offer px100s or igrados... even though i've never really heard them before?

but if they were to ask about "good for classical," or "great for rock," i don't think anyone should recommend a specific pair of headphones lest they add a disclaimer of "IMO" or "this is what i gather from reading these forums."

=)

If I'm catching the jist of this thread, it would be OK if you stated that you never heard them before and are simply suggesting the OP check them based on what you have read in the forums. For me, I try not to respond in threads that involve equipment that I haven't heard.

Explain why it's fine "up to a certain point", and more importantly, how you came up with the criteria for "a certain point". Extending your logic a bit, it's fine if an axe murderer kills five people, but if he kills a sixth person, it's not ok anymore.

Isn't there the possibility of the flip side of this coin as well? I read so many reviews where the ultimate setup just happens to be the reviewers. We all come on here to gush about new toys, of course, but I think there is a tendency to try and convert others to your way of thinking, regardless of what it is.

Long story short, use your profile. You can tell more about a person's opinion from their gear page, their signature and their location than you might imagine.

Just a suggestion.

You said "vilify them too". Who else are we vilifying?

well, we're vilifying those people who make recommendations about stuff they've never heard. then it seemed as though some wanted to vilify those who, with no intent of padding post counts, insert short or terse posts in support of something. so, the too are the latter, while the else are the former.

Well said. I hope I am not guilty of this. I try to only post opinions on things I have heard first hand.

x2

(i support the x2 posts. they serve a valid purpose - to bolster an opinion so as to make it closer to truth.)
