cecil just doesn't do it for me and lots of musicians i speak to. it's more spectacular to see than hear. i know many students at the Manhattan School of Music, Julliard, and even Mannes that play and improvise with better ideas and with a lot more technique. within his 10 minute improvs there is maybe a minute or two of real substance while the rest is kinda like whackin you know what. probably a little harsh but listen closely and try to follow where he is trying to go and how he builds his ideas.....kinda like listening to Liszt. it's spectacular to hear one or two times around but the more you listen and study (to music in general) you know that it's really missing the meat and potatoes.

I'm with you here I prefer Michel Camilo, Corea, Hancock, even Elian Elias or why not, Diana Krall...etc...by a good margin, Michel is also a far more versatil musician, from classical to jazz he covers everything, but I just mentioned Cecil as he is indeed a freaky piano player, but I agree that IMO is more show than an actual peformance...

Still think the question should be put to Camilo…or Corea…or Hancock…or, why not, Eliane Elias. Probably not Diana Krall, though.

Well I was not talking of the merits a pianist only, which we all know Diana Krall is not as good as the rest, but as a whole show. Not sure if you do, but I do prefer to see live Diana rather than Cecil for obvious reasons, that lady is refined, gracious and beautiful, and Cecil is not...
