Joy Division is my favorite here...

A few others worth checking out:

Red Lorry, Yellow Lorry
Siouxsie and The Banshees
Xmal Deutschland
The Cure
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
The March Violets
Gene Loves Jezebel
The Church

I could go on, but this is sufficient.

I used to like the Eurythmics Touch and Savage tapes. This music depresses me a little, now. I guess I blame that on my tying of pop culture to the social climate of the times (the "me first" thinking of the 80s).

ABC, World Party, The Cult, and The Clash also had some very groovy tunes.

Most of the rest of the 80s stuff that i like(d) either hasn't aged well IMO, or else I picked up on it in the wrong decade; I don't think of Depeche Mode or Stone Roses as eighties bands.

erasure
depeche mode
the cure
new order
human league
etc...

of course these bands put out albums well into the 90's and some are still putting stuff out. so i guess they're not really 80's bands.
