Which IEM's next? I'm very indecisive with my portable setup

As i'm sure many of you are as well

Anyway, here is my journey for my portable setup; (Current Source: iPhone)

1. Westone UM2 - Had these for nearly two years. Excellent SQ, but the pressure started annoying me after awhile (comply tips), tried other tips but nothing sounded as good for me. I wanted to try something else as I just got tired of em having owned them so long and wanted a change and try to see what else was out there. Loved the cable BTW.

2. Shure E500 - Excellent SQ (IMO - Cleaner than the UM2), but two things annoyed me: The cord, and my ears would get hot wearing them (still haven't figured out why) - maybe the thick cord? Sold these about a month after buying them, also didn't like having $300 tied up in a portable headphone when I don't use them nearly as much as my home rig.

3. V-Moda Vibe Duo Nero (for iPhone) - Horrid, I HATED every second of these (even after burning them in). They were way to muddy for me, annoying boomy bass, recessed mids and highs, I just hated them all around.

4. Audio Technica ATH-ES7 - Decided to try some non-iem portable cans and these came highly recommended. As much as I love the sound (I really do like the balance of these cans), they just don't fit my ears. My ears feel like a fireball after about 30-45 minutes of use (I have a reoccurring problem - don't I? ) Gonna sell them this week.

Thought about picking up a Noise-Canceling headphone (ATH-ANC7 or Jabra 820) but the size really turns me off, I think I would be annoyed by the size during any lengthy trip around the country or to Europe, etc... So i'm back to looking at IEM's as I really do prefer them to be ultra portable.

The music I currently listen to: Coldplay, Maroon 5, Yo-Yo Ma, Wynton Marsalis, Donavan Frankenreiter, Timbaland, Led Zeppelin, Deep Forest, Bob Marley (Basically EVERYTHING except country)

I would prefer to stay under $150

I REALLY like the sound of these two home headphones (if it helps): DT770 (killer subwoofer bass) & HD595 (just so silky smooth)

So - Now that I've written my dissertation (I feel like I've written this before); what's next?

PORTABLE / COMFORTABLE / SOUNDS GREAT / $150 or UNDER / DURABLE

Q-Jays? (though at $179 more than I want to spend)
Atrio M5? (don't care for the design and I hear durability is questionable)
ER-6i (awesome price - but no bass at all?)
ER-4p (worth the $159? Better than the q-jays?)

I'm not sure that the ER4P's/ER6i's are what you're looking for. IMO, amped, they have perfect bass. I don't listen to any of the music you mentioned except for Led Zeppelin. I absolutely love the way the cymbals come through on my ER4P's.. I can't say it enough. I brag on these all the time but I always feel compelled

I really want to recommend them but I don't listen to the rest of the music you do and I'm not sure how you would like it. I'll do some googling and see what the music is like and edit this post.

JBL Reference 220 can be had for under $40. Panasonic HJE70 for under $100. I own both and use Ultimate Ears large flange tips for a good fit. Both sound good unamped, but I place the HJE70's over the 220's for sound quality. The bass on the 220's can get too boomy at times. They used to fall out of my ears frequently until I started to use the UE tips.

Along with my ER-4's, this is the extent of my knowledge of IEM's.

Well I don't like earbuds, so the Pannys are out. But the JBL looks interesting, dunno if they would be as good as the Q-Jays or Artio's though.

Hrmph....

i love my e500 and i can see what you mean by your ears may get hot, mine tend to do so after a while, but i always put it down to excessive volume and pressure build up in ear canal.

or it could be i have the seal simply too tight and its flush with canal causing slight friction when i talk or chew.

either way they are amazing as you found out but its wise to get rid if they cause you more discomfort than pleasure, try out the livewires they are a nice set of phones but beware the sound isnt what many would call special and customs dont have much come back if any

If you can find the Etymotic Research ER-4P at a reasonable price, go get them. They are excellent in-ear monitor headphones, with really good sound quality. Other good alternatives in the same price range are the Ultimate Ears super.fi 5 Pro and the Denon AH-C700.

I just got the UE Super.Fi 5 Pros and i really like them. I listen to alot of Rock, Pop/Punk, Indie, some rap here and there. I think they sound great. They are my favorite out of all the IEM's i have owned so far.

I've owned almost all of Ultimate Ear's lineup (super.fi 3, super.fi 5 pro, triple.fi 10 pro, and now the UE11) and I would jump on those q-Jays based on what I see for sound quality, but I haven't heard them. For fun though, the super.fi 5 pro are pretty super.
