my diy HD 580 cable build

I'll let the pics do the talking.. but i basically exposed the contacts for the connectors using a 1.4mm engraving bit and a dremmel - soldered the mogami 2893 cable to the pins and then filled with two layers of expoxy resin. I then heathsrinked the wires from the y split to the connectors and then used two layers of adhesive lined heatshrink to give the connectors some strength. The y split is from qables, this was also filled with expoy for strength.

The difference is like night and day! compared to the cheap extension lead and default cable I was using.

What would I do different?
More acurate soldering iron.
Use a heat gun for heatshrinking
Not burn a big hole in my thumb soldering after a night shift.
Use cotton to go from y-split to cans instead of heatshrink.

whats "hc" mean. the cables are only $15 - if you mess up it aint that much of a loss.

hardcore! haha. nice i cant get senn cables for 15 dollars up here in little canada ><!

Great job! The first one is always the hardest. As said a nice iron and heat gun would help quite a bit. Try a lighter next time instead of the stove... allows you to better control the heat.

definately! I was thinking a lighter would not have enough heat output but that was my problem here.. still happy with end result though.

The structural integrity is fine and it holds in the can more solidly than before.

For my next one I am thinking maybe cardas 4 x 24 but it is sooo expensive for my 15 foot run. So expensive infact that i could probably pick up a second hand cardas original for the money.

I may get a mini soldering iron, the ones that take gas.. that way it could double as a controlled heat source as well.

i believe some of those electrical coupler plugs are the same width. you just have to saw the connector in half and they'll plug into your sennheizers. more work, looks cleaner

I have seen them, 2 probs.. they look spliced (I wanted to go straight on the pins)
They aren't long enough - I need 15 foot

also what cable is used? they are certainly cheap!
Yeah, they do look spliced, that's what has prevented me from trying them. The cheaper one uses 99.99% copper cable made by StreetWires. Nothing spectacular, but then again it's probably no worse than the Canare cable (not that it shouldn't be good). The headphone plug is surely good

next time I would either get some stranded silver wire insulated with ptfe, cover each stranded section with a cotton jacket and braid it... or just go for some cardas 4 x 24

I would use a high quality copper cable, probably. Silver is cool sounding enough that I don't know if it'd do much good to the HD580's own sound (thinking of my HD650, at least).
