Silver AKG k141 ?! (pictures included) - Page 5

I don't think I just got used to it though maybe that helps.  But I think usually a smell comes from the place they were in before having something in the air that stuck to the phones, like something they cooked with or product they used or something.  So when it's in a new environment without those things in the air, and doesn't have contact with new stuff, I think whatever is on the phones slowly goes away.  I bet fresh air and sun would be the best.  But drivers don't like sunlight.

I guess it depends on what the smell is.

Man, that shampoo smell can get DEEP into these pleather headbands.

I don't think it's shampoo - it's after shave. That mix of alcohol, oil and scents penetrates any material. It's most common on headphones from Germany. All the methods you've tried will reduce the problem, not solve it. I've become used to it now that I know my headphones are clean but that faint scent still is there. It's part of the HD565's identity, as is the different perfume of the K400.

It will fade with time. And it could be worse: the "Dachboden" must, or basement mould, is impossible to ged rid of or live with. That's why I'm selling my old NAD headphones to someone less sensitive to smells.

I'll have to try some rubbing alcohol, thanks, Kisho.

It's not a terrible smell, but I'm allergic to perfume so I'll need to go the extra mile.

It could be aftershave too; it's not terribly thick, luckily, like the concoction on the Sextett headband.

You have the K 140, MDR30? Would you say it has a deep soundstage? The depth was one of the first things that hit me about the 141, and it's still making me very happy listening to them. Kind of a cubical soundstage.

I got some 90-or-so % ethanol and wiped the headband thoroughly with it, seems to have taken away most of the smell that was still there. In fact the headband is pretty much serviceable now.

Congratulations!  Is it good enough for your allergies or do you still need more suggestions?

Someone just got a pair of vintage K 141 for 13.50 euros + shipping: http://cgi.ebay.de/AKG-Monitor-Kopfhorer-Headphone-/260737149908

A head-fier, perhaps?

Sorry to interfere in-between this thread but it looks to me I could get here exactly the answer I am looking for. Regarding the silver AKG K 141 I read the pads are glued instead of mounted with a bayonet (screw-on) meachnism. Are these glue-on pads still available as replacements, and which kind of glue to use? Is it possible, alternatively, to replace both capsule housings with the more current ones (with bayonet mechanism)?

Thanks very much in advance for any advice.
