Original Grado SR325s vs. Updated Grado SR325s

Hi! This is something that has always bugged me. I know that Grado updated the 325s some years ago from the original (which looks basically like the 225s) to a new look (silver, alluminum on the outside instead of plain plastic).

Has anyone done a comparison of the old and new one? Did they change the drivers or the sound? or is it just a change in the look?

As far as I'm aware it is just the look as well as the earpads. For about 2 years Grado has been using the newer bowl shaped pads. The original black version came with the Grado flat donut earpads.

The original 325s were also aluminum. It's just that it was black instead of silver. Also, the leather headband of the old 325s had a stiff rod inside, sorta like how people have described their HPs. As for sound, I can't really tell because I didn't listen to either long enough to make a clear judgement. From my recollection of the two, I thought the older 325s weren't quite as bright, but the differences could very well have been in the equipment because I listened to the old 325s through a Nad CD player and integrated while I heard the new ones through an RA-1 and an Arcam DV27.
