Head-and-phone equalization

It may not be generally known that it is fairly easy to improve the frequency response accuracy of some headphones by equalizing perceived response aberrations. I recently did this for my Etymotic ER-4S earphones. Take a look and study how I went about it. You probably have a lot of unrealized potential in the phones you use.

Have fun experimenting.

have you tried to make such an equalization device for the hd600?

i read most of your article... and you noted that you have to know the output impedance of the headphone amp. is there a way you can make a device independent of this?--usable for any headphone amp?

perhaps a universal headphone equalizer with a slot for different "equalization cards...", each one specific for a certain model headphone.

i realize you probably can get one of those behringer digital EQ's, and just make equalization curves for different models of headphones...... but i think it would be fun to make a dedicated headphone EQ.

what you think?

No

Yes

Yes, that would be one way of doing it.

If you read on in my article you will see how to measure the output impedance of your amplifier and how to design an equalizer that works with that impedance. You then find what eq network might be needed for the HD600.

Start simple, learn and then come up with your "universal" solution. I do not know the limits of the Behringer for sharp notches.

well, this type of project is beyond me, for now, ....but i was thinking perhaps you would like to make such an universal device yourself and share it with the rest of us that lack the skills to do it ourselves.

it would certainly be the first such device.... though i dunno how popular it would be, seeing the aversion to EQ in these forums... (for instance.... i'm the only one who responded to you so far!)
