Are 1/8" to 1/4" Adapters all the same?

Thread Starter
I have a few adapters that came with my cheap $10 headphones, and I have some $2 adapters purchased at radioshake and even some a $6 adapter set purchased at WalMart. My favorit adapter would have to be the ones that came with my Sennheiser HD590 headphones. It's gold plated, looks great, & feels like it's made of good quality material.

Are all adapters pretty much "created equal"... or are there some pretty good ones and some really cheap ones? If so, what are some links to good quality ones?

Nice question, I have been asking the same thing for some time as well. Could any headphone Guru answer this and help us out.

-bump- To get some notice...

I've been curious about the same thing... I sure know that I can't tell the difference sonically between adapters but I might be missing something.

The difference is probably virtually none. There can be no signal loss as far as I can see. I supposed that if the adapter is made out of a different metal than the 1/8" plug, it might slightly alter the sound, but I would guess that the difference would be slight at best.

I would apply the same criteria to an adaptor as to any jack/plug. Ideally, it should be made of non-ferrous material i.e. brass, copper, etc., with a gold, silver, rhodium, etc. plating.

The question is: Are they available?

IMO, just go for one with gold plating.

Unless someone like Cardas comes out with one, it's pretty much a crap shoot. You can bring a magnet to see if it's ferrous or not, and who knows you might get lucky.
