Tested my ipod touch with my Pro 900, ED 8 and German Maestro 435S now. I have no reference with other portable setups but when you really have to A-B with your home system you know it´s not THAT bad...

I get no hiss on any of these three low impedance headphones. The bass doesn´t get flabby or unctrolled on either. As for soundstage it´s actually pretty good too!

The iPod touch does not hiss with anything but the most sensitive of iems. It has one of the cleanest HPO of any DAP. It doesn't drive balanced armature earphones very well, but otherwise, it is great even with my DT880 @ 600 ohm.

Check the iPod touch 2G SQ one year on review for reference.

This may be a dead thread, but i'll add my two cents, for what its worth.

Part of the reason I signed up for this website was to see if it was just me that was disappointed with the touch's sound quality. To be honest, I've been disappointed with every ipod i've purchased, and usually have returned them, but the touch just has so many plusses otherwise that makes it hard to resist. Going to a touch from the Cowon X5 has been a very painful process...and I find myself still listening to my almost dead X5 whenever I can...Being a fan of modifying how songs sound to suit my liking (i.e. EQ), its supremely frustrating that you can't touch the EQ on the touch without distortion rearing its ugly head. I've just bought a Line Out cord and am trying to get a Ray Samuels portable amp to see if it will remedy the problem...its just sad that to be completely happy with the touch I have to spend another ~400 bucks.....but unfortunately, the iTunes ecosystem has a grip on me (like it does many others).

Wow I really needed to rant didn't I??? If anyone is still listening, lets band together and get Cowon to release a 64 gb + player eh?

I agree that the Touch doesn't have a stellar SQ but it has so many pluses that I can live happily with it. And yeah, iTunes on PC is just plain horrible. Not only slow but also sometimes doesn't recognizes my iPods/iPhone.

I agree WRT the 1st Gen touch. I still have mine, and it can't hold a candle to either my iPhone 3G S or 2009 iPod Classic.

Hey everyone,

I was referring to the 3rd gen Touch....I caved and bought one back in November of last year to replace my beloved X5.

Looks like I lost out on the ebay bidding for the Ray Samuels amp today...got wayyyy too expensive for me. I think that i'll have to bite the bullet and sell the touch to replace it with something Cowon, or Samsung perhaps. Problem with Cowon's is that they're so damn expensive for what you get. I'm not willing to spend more on a 32 gb S9 than a touch...just seems wrong.

I tried my best not to be too critical of the touch's SQ when I first bought it...but countless comparisons between it and the X5 just finally wore me down. I know its kind of cliche to rip ipods sound quality...but i'd have to say that all my experiences (ipod classic 5g, ipod classic 6g, ipod touch 3g) have cemented that fact with me. Great for everything else though....if you got transported 10 years back and showed someone an ipod touch, i'm pretty sure their head would explode.

Also, what the hell is Sony thinking with their pricing of the X series??? I mean, damn. Sweet player, something I would be definitely interested in....I even went to the store to check if the prices online were legit, because they seemed so....wrong. I don't' know how they're priced in the States, but up here in Canada the 32 gb X series is selling for $400! Smart marketing Sony...price your newest best player 100 bucks more than the market leading competition. Great way to claw your way into the market share.
