the ATH-A900 go for about $180 new but can be found for as low as $140 used in fs/trade forum threads but i have never purchased anything from a forum before for fear of losing my money so this is not an option for me

if i were to wait would the price on ebay or amazon ever go down to around 130-150 shipped or am i forced to pay the full retail price

Should we be insulted that you would be willing to buy from someone on eBay but not from someone on head-fi??

If you want to be thoroughly safe, I suppose, you should probably pay full price and buy from AudioCubes.

I started out with the same mindset when I first joined here, but then realized that the community here and most of the members are top-notch, thus warranting an almost perfectly safe transaction between members.

Last week I sent a pair of ER4P's to a member with great feedback before I even received payment, which came today. I've done the same thing a couple of times in the past w/certain reputable members, and there's even an amp manufacturer who did the same for me (I'm assuming they read my feedback)! To date, I've never been burned by a Head-Fi member, but that's not saying it couldn't happen. Like schalldamfer said, most of the members here are top-notch. When considering a sale here - as the buyer or seller - the "Feedback" section of this forum is vital to peace-of-mind. Why not check the seller's feedback and, if it's good, be comfortable sending money to a stranger in exchange for your AT cans. If you're still hesitant, well, then buy new from an online retailer (like Holly suggested).

i would be willing to buy from someone here but would my not having experience\feedback from buying stuff this way be a problem could i use my feedback from ebay

guess i'll wait and see if there are any for sale after being registered for more than the minimum of 30 days just got into headphones people from hardforum recommended this site thanks for the help

also do you have any advice on buying and trading the sticky mentioned getting the persons phone number and address sending a letter by mail and asking them to respond to it before sending money

i imagine that would only be necessary if they don't have good feedback please any help would be appreciated i am constantly seeing things posted for great prices but have always hesitated

does paypal offer any kind of insurance with this kind of purchase

you could use ebay feedback, but if you're a new BUYER, look for a reputable seller. and as long as you send money first and there's no issues when the money arrives, there's no reason for the SELLER not to sell to you, because by that stage they'd have had the money in their hands.

paypal has buyer protection, but read the terms and conditions on that

the minimum of 50 posts is that for both buyer and seller or just the seller

basically if after the 30 days i have yet to make at least 50 post will i as a buyer be able to post in the fs/trade section to tell the seller i am interested

also i see that when someone is interested in the item up for sale they send a pm to the seller what should that pm say exactly

again thanks i see some people sell stuff for over $1000 here so i should be ok i hope

As far as I know, the 50 post minimum is just for those who want to sell something; I don't think there is post restriction for the buyer. Positive feedback from eBay, Audiogon, etc., should reassure sellers if you have no feedback here.

Answering an offer with a PM is easy - just tell the seller you are interested in buying the item for the price as advertised and ask any questions you might have about the item.

I have purchased equipment here at head-fi, including headphones, amps, cables, DACs, etc., and have never had any problems. In my experience, and from what I have read, the vast majority of folks here are honest people who usually sell something because they want to upgrade to something else, they aren't interested in scamming someone. If there is any problem with the item, even if it is only cosmetic, sellers will normally include that information in the for sale post. And of course, pictures are usually a must!

the 50 post restriction is for anyone posting int he FS/FT forum... but you can still read the posts and PM sellers (no need to post in the FS/FT section to buy... just read the feedback, communicate through PM and be willing to prove that you are serious: send address/phone nr, send money first if the other party has lots of good feedback,...)

also, make sure you fill out your profile and add a location etc so ppl get the feeling you are/will be/want to be a serious Head-Fier and a real person...

no probs... if you are sincere and willing to prove it, the 50+ posts and 30 days membership shouldn't need to stop you trying some great cans

Oops; you are of course correct, Televator; sorry about the misinformation in my post, punbx360.

I hope you are able to find the headphones you want; there are so many choose from and a lot of us, including myself, have no where locally where you can "try before you buy." I depend on the reviews from folks here to get a good idea of the sound signature before I buy headphones and related equipment, and haven't regretted any of my purchases. I do need to sell some of my headphones that are gathering dust, and plan to use the for sale forum here for that; this place makes me spend way more money than I should, but at least I can get some of it back and someone else will get to enjoy a nice set of cans!
