TAS Article on Joe Lau and New ASL Amp

Thread Starter
The current issue of The Absolute Sound (www.theabsolutesound.com) has a lengthy review by Harry Pearson of a 100w tube mono amp from Antique Sound Labs, the Hurricane. The review is very favorable, and HP feels that the amps are cause for him to go back over some equipment he had previously listened to in order to hear how they can really sound. I don't have the review in front of me, but I found it to be an interesting read.

The real reason I am posting is the small side article that was written about Joe Lau, founder of Antique Sound Labs. It was an interesting overview of his path into amp design and construction, and I felt it gave some depth to someone who for me has been little more than a name next to posts for a while.

Congrats to Mr. Lau on the great review, and I wish you continued success. For anyone else interested in some info on the designer and maker of some great products, I'd recommend picking up this month's The Absolute Sound.

The review pretty much stated that the monoblock Hurricanes are, overall, the best amplifiers that Harry Pearson has ever used at any price. It was one of the most flattering reviews I've read in The Absolute Sound, and I've been reading that publication for a very long time.

As grancasa stated, the article has a nice writeup on Joe, and there's also mention of Tash Goka (of Divergent).

Congratulations, Joe and Tash!

Thanks Joe for all your dedication to this community and to your work. Happy birthday to you too. It's good to see someone who can take constructive criticism and use it to make their products better. Unlike some other audio companies (Electraglide **cough**.)

I was just wondering, has the TAS reviewer heard the AQ1009 845? That amp looks wicked too.

I don't think we can get TAS in Australia so I'll probably never be able to read the article unless I buy the mag online.

Joe,

I must wholeheartedly concur with EvilCthul, your attitude and openess to input and criticism will keep you in business long after your tube amp competitors have gone by the wayside. Your active participation here is just one proof of what customer care and support you provide. That you actually listen and implement changes is another step almost no company takes in a time when most audio equipment manufacturers are relying on their name recognition was unheard of. I have read review after review where someone says that the company who's product was reviewed years earlier never implemented the necessary changes to make their product more competitive. That you sought the opinions of actual headphone users and audiophiles as to which headphones to use to sound and design your headphone amps was a death blow to some of your competitors. Your approach to design and quality control has drastically improved in response to customer complaints. All in all I would say that I would hope to one day have one of your amps grace my apartment! Byt the time I am in the market to look at a replacement or additional amp, there shall be more and more great ALS products available that will sound incredible, and cost precious little. Your MG Head really opened the market for great sounding, affordable tube sound, and I eagerly await what else you have planned in the near future to blow our minds.

From all of us headphone lovers out there, we thank you for making this a wonderful time to be alive and into listening to headphones!!!!!!
