Has anyone tried the Cary SLI 80 with grados?

Is better/worse than the CAD 300SEI?
Yes.

I'm currently using an SLI-80 with the Grado HP-1. A truly magical combination, at this moment. I've rolled the tubes a little though, so my Cary is not exactly stock. (Svetlana KT-88s, and Amperex JAN 7308 Orange labels.)

I've not compared the SLI-80 with the 300SEI. However, fellow head-fier Carlo has. He likes the SLI-80 a little better. You can search for a recent statement to that effect. I think I remember him rating the "80" a 9.5, and the "300" an 8 or 8.5, out of 10.

Hope this helps.

Just to clarify, my ratings were based on the amps' ability to make Sennheisers sound their best. I haven't heard the yield of a Grado driven by a Cary, but I'm thinking its time for another visit to smokey's place

Is there much hum with the Grados?

I would expect there would be some. Is this true?

Has anyone heard this amp in comparison to an Earmax or EAR HP4?
I'm not hearing any hum with the HP-1s. The W2002s tend to show a little hum in some circumstances. I think its related to their efficiency vesus the relative inefficiency of the Grado's. I can't guarantee that will be case in anyone else's situation.

I've not tried the Grado's with the other amps that you mention. However, there are extensive reviews of all things Grado in the archives. I'm sure others have posted impressions with these amps.

What output tubes have people tried with this amp?

For instance are KT88's better than EL34's?

Do different brands of rectifier tubes make a significant difference?
