*Can the 160 GB Ipod Classic be used without Cover Flow? Text only?

*Can you retro-fit an old version of the ipod software that doesn't have all the battery and hard drive issues, and not install the new ones?

1. sure. coverflow is just an alternative way to browse your libary

Yes, sorry, the newest build, vs 1.00.2 or whatever it is called.

I'm told the hard drive spins constantly, even after power-off, draining the battery.

so confirmed that coverflow can be turned off n can be used normally like the old ipods?

admittedly i want to upgrade from my 1st gen 4gb nano to the 80gb classic for the space, SQ and well the big screen - just nicer 2 read. so good to know i can use the whole screen.

I was aware of this problems with the 1.0.2 firmware when i received my 160GB classic. It cames with the 1.0.1 firmware and i didn't upgraded. It's working very well up to now, which is almost a week.
If you get a classic with the 1.0.2 firmware, i do believe it's possible to downgrade to 1.0.1. I've saw a guide for it, but you'll need to google for it.
Well, until apple releases a new firmware (say 1.0.3 or whatever) i'll stuck with this one because it's working well.

BTW, the issue caused by the 1.0.2 seems to be a problem with the hard drive not stopping to spin after the ipod is turned off, causing the battery to be completed drain after a few hours ...

So it's firmware that's the problem with the iPod classics? Meaning it'll be updated/fixed eventually? I think my dad is buying me a new iPod for xmas. I was going to try to get him to buy me a 5.5g 80gig one off eBay or something, but if the problems with the new iPods will eventually be fixed, I'll just keep it simple and tell him to go to our local Apple store.

Though, I really like the look of the 5.5g white iPods better than the new iPod Classics......It would look pimpalicious with a pair of white Q-Jays and a white iBasso T2

To clarify: Coverflow cannot be turned off, as far as I know. You can opt not to use it as a way to browse the library, and when you browse using test-based methods (such as artist, genre, album name), the text does use the whole screen. But in the menus, the text of the menu options only uses the left half of the screen, while some graphic occupies the right half (depending on the menu option highlighted -- for music options, it shows portions of album covers, there are dedicated graphics for such things as settings and extras).

Coverflow is another mode to browse the audio library. Such as artist, genre, songs, etc. You can choose not to use it simple like that. I even chose not to display it on my music menu (you can change this setting under settings/music menu) so i'll not accidentely enter in coverflow mode ...

You can still browse your collection without using coverflow.

There are some issues with the 1.0.2 firmware... rumor is v1.0.3 will be out within a week so hopefully some of this stuff will be fixed.

so ummmm after coverflow is turned off, is what htbyron saying correct in that it still only uses half the screen?
cause that would be a real deal breaker.

I repeat: coverflow cannot be turned off. Thus, menus use half the screen, but library browsing using text options (as discussed above) use the full screen.

edit: I noticed in your other thread that you refer to "song info." I'm not sure what you mean by that, but if you're referring to the Now Playing screen, it is full-screen, but does display cover art. You may need to do a little research (or even go to a store to try one out), as it's not at all clear what you're asking here.

Guys I'm using 1.0.2 with my 160gb classic, without any kind of problems, battery lasts as long as usually and menus are faster IMO. But yes, it doesn't mean that it's working on everyones classic.

Coverflow is never "off". It's just another option like Album, Artist, Genre, etc. in the music menu. You don't have to use it if you don't want to.

The half-screen thing is only for the root screens. Once you're actually into your collection it's full screen. It's actually an awesome setup.
