I'm thinking about purchasing this package -->

http://www.headphone.com/products/pa...iser-hd650.php

This is my first set of quality headphones. I'm mostly going to listen at my office while on the computer. I plan on using the Usb cable to hook directly to the headroom desktop amp is this the preferred method? Do the hd650s leak sound and if so how much will they bother my neighbors? Also is this a good package for a newbie? Thanks a bunch!!!

forget about being a newbie, that's a great system for anyone. headroom makes great products and the hd650s are great 'phones, particularly balanced.

the set-up you described will work great with your computer. since the amp has the dac included in the package, you can take a usb cable and plug it right into the headroom.

the hd650s definitely leak -- folks around you will hear it. it won't be that bad if you're listening at low levels, but if you turn it up at all folks around you will be able to hear everything clearly.

Thanks for the info!! I'm really set on the hd650s. My office isn't that quiet so it should be okay.

I'd also recommend you demo some HD650s before buying them. As jcn3 said, depending on your preferred listening volume and type of music, it could be a problem with your neighbors, even if your office isn't very quiet.

I work in a downright loud office but honestly couldn't imagine bringing those headphones into work. (I have 595s but am very familiar with 650s)

But then I like loud, thumping music so I guess it depends on what you're going to listen to. If you like light classical music at library-mouse volumes, you should be fine! Best of luck!

You also should try and make sure that HD650 is for your tastes. For rock I would touch them with a 10-foot pole for example.

I like Rock, blues and accoustic (live recording, folk). Should i consider a different set of headphones?

How about the AKG 701 for Sound leakage?

yeah, me too -- i liked the 600s and 650s for rock with my ppx3 slam. i think you just need a amp with enough ummph.

for perspective, i like more acoustic stuff (clapton, james taylor, lyle lovett, mary chapin carpenter, kim richey) and don't really dig grados except for maybe the rs-1s. i do like the 701s -- i appreciate their accurately and don't interpret that as sterile.

I personally think the HD650s sound wonderful for those genres, though I admit I'm not terribly versed with folk. Acoustic & mainstream rock though, I absolutely love Sennheisers for those types of music, but that's very subjective obviously.

If it were me, I'd be more concerned with your preferred listening environment and a pair of headphones to compliment it. Listen to the HD650s and see if the sounds bleeding from them isn't too much for your office. Hopefully you can also play some of your music through them at the same time and see if it sounds good to you.

Need amp with less veil and less bloat (thats how my ears respond to hd650)...I guess GS-X could work, but there is still something fishy going on that bothers me.

I quite like my 650 with rock, actually. The 650 blooms at higher volumes, though, so if you intend to listen quietly, it might not be the best phone for that.
